Source Says PSP 2's Graphics On Par With PS3

by Matt Helgeson on Dec 08, 2010 at 05:44 AM

IGN is reporting that a source in the development community is saying that Sony's long-rumored PSP 2 is very much a reality, and that the handheld will feature amazing graphical power, rivaling some early PS3 games.

This source also revealed some interesting details about the hardware itself. The unit features two analog sticks, similar to the stick found on the current PSP. However, the tops of the sticks are concave rather than convex. The unit's control array slides out from under the screen, much like the PSPgo. It will has no disc drive, meaning that games will either be sold as digital downloads or on memory sticks. There are two cameras, facing front and back, and a microphone. The rumored rear-facing touch panel is also real.

IGN's source says the unit is about half as powerful as the PS3 in terms of processing power, but will be able to display comparable graphics because of the much smaller display.

The source also confirmed that the pictures of the unit seen in this story – which were originally leaked by VG247 – represent the most current version of the hardware.

Looks like PSP 2 is shaping up to be the big news of E3 2011.
