EA Says Single-Player Gaming Is On The Way Out

Speaking with Develop, EA Games president Frank Gibeau says that the company will be focusing on "connected" gameplay experiences, and says that the era of single-player only experiences is likely coming to an end.

"Online is where the innovation, and the action, is at" said Gibeau. "I volunteer you to speak to EA’s studio heads; they’ll tell you the same thing. They’re very comfortable moving the discussion towards how we make connected gameplay – be it co-operative or multiplayer or online services – as opposed to fire-and-forget, packaged goods only, single-player, 25-hours-and you’re out. I think that model is finished."

However, that doesn't mean that EA feels online multiplayer is the only way to push connectivity in its games. "It’s not only about multiplayer, it’s about being connected." said Gibeau. I firmly believe that the way the products we have are going they, need to be connected online. Multiplayer is one form of that."

We wonder what other models of connectivity EA has in mind. What do you think? Do you still enjoy single-player gaming experiences?

  • I like multi-player sometimes, but I prefer single player most of the time.

  • EA is full of sh!t.
  • Ha! Love playing fallout all the time, you cant cal single player a "outdated model". this past decade has had single player games that you cannot help but say "yea it was awesome".
  • I'm so glad that someone has finally told me what it is i need and want! i've been lost this whole time! I love multiplayer gaming, but i also really enjoy the solo campaigns. Before I ever play multiplayer in a game i first complete the solo campaign, no exceptions

  • I don't completely agree. Multiplayer is awesome, whether it be co-op or whatever. But sometimes, a great single player game is what's needed. Like God of War, Dead Space, Zelda, Assassin's Creed 1 n 2 ME 1 n 2 etc etc etc....some games just need to be a single player epic experience. Multiplayer is nice, but for like Dead Space 2....I'm getting it for the single player experience, the multiplayer will just be an added thing to do once I'm done with the game. Same with AC Brotherhood, I occasionally mess around with the multiplayer for a change of pace, but my real enjoyment comes from the single player.
  • LIES. i will take a good single player game over multiplayer any day of the week. the only reason i keep games like black ops around is to hold me over until the next single player game i want comes out. (and its pretty fin while its doing that...) but i would never buy a game just for the multiplayer.

  • I play single player primarily. I only play online multiplayer/co-op when I get bored. But, the single player campaigns and experiences are what I look forward to most when buying games.
  • No, I still want titles a lot like ME2. TOR is good too, but I need my single-player experiences.
  • Online is where the money is, not where innovation and action can solely take place. The change to mass market mulitplayer games isn't necessarily about "what the gamers want". The amount of DLC they can sell in the form of map packs or playable characters is incredible, and you can throw together a mulitplayer experience far faster than designing a good 20 hour story, so you can sell more games in a shorter period of time.

  • I prefer singel player over multiplayer anyday, besides what about the people who dont have live?
  • based on some of the games that ea has decided to put out the past few years i dare say that some of their opinions on what the gaming public wants is a bit suspect.

  • I don't think that single player is finished, but i do agree that being "connected" is becoming very important/popular

  • "It’s not only about multiplayer, it’s about being connected."

Gag. Let me ask you marketing people out there a question: I wasn't a biology major so I'm not 100% sure of all the complex workings of the human body but...

Do they teach you these nauseating buzzwords in school or do you have to be just naturally born with some superhuman ability to expel continuous rivers of *** from your mouth?
  • Boooo, single-player experiences are the way to go, not gonna restate reasons that have already been said.

  • Innovation? Almost all multiplayer focused games that come out now are just re-skinnings of previous titles. Lets look at the games with the most innovation; Mass Effect, Heavy Rain, Red Dead Redemption, God of War, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid. Look at that all of those are single player focused, it looks like there is far more innovation in single player games. People are still very interested in single player games, just look at the games up for game of the year.
  • Bust out the pitchforks and light your torches, because lets mob up and stop EA from destroying our greatest single-player expirences. I seriously hate when companies decide that ever game needs multiplayer.
  • mass effect series, elder scrolls, rpg's. dont get me wrong, the option would be cool to get online, but its just really nice, to just have you in the world, create your own destiny with no one else there to ruin the personalized experience for you. its merely an opinion tho.

we'll just have to wait and see.

  • There's a key word in there, 'single player ONLY'. Basically saying that games that only provide single player gaming and no online component or multiplayer experience are on the way out. This, I agree with. But for a game to come out and not have any competitive mode, online leaderboards, or way to interact with other players is starting to get rare.

  • I think they may be right...for a certain group of people.  For me, though, no---they're wrong.

  • I love playing with friends both on and offline, but there are times I want to play by myself.
