January Cover Revealed

Lara Croft's Eyes

Forget what you know about Lara Croft. As of today, all that is changing.

In our world-exclusive cover story, we uncover a brand-new Lara Croft. Rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn’t so much a choice as an act of necessity, according to Crystal Dynamics. Drastic measures were needed. To build an entirely fresh Lara – a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly – they must break her first. In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.

Make sure to check out the Tomb Raider hub (via the banner below) throughout the month of December for more exclusive details about Lara Croft’s rebirth.

We've got two logo treatments for the new cover – a collaborative effort between Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix studio Visualworks. You can see one in the front cover image below, and the other in the full wraparound spread that's a little further down the page.

In addition to the ten exclusive pages of Tomb Raider details, we’ve got a full book of other compelling content. Jeff Cork takes a look at gaming on the other side off the world, diving into policy and practices in Iran. Additionally, Annette Gonzalez broke a sweat by rounding up and breaking down all the current Kinect fitness offerings at retail. Also, don’t forget to check out our previews of Dead Space 2 and L.A. Noire.

The January issue of Game Informer will start arriving in subscriber’s mailboxes this week, and will hit newsstands the 11th of December.

  • Awesome stuff. I was never really into Tomb Raider, but I like origin stories like this. Chances of me getting this game are high already.
  • Well, I was hoping for a game that would be more of my type so...I got nothing.

  • I've never played a Tomb Raider game.  Lara has never been a very compelling character to me, but this looks interesting.

  • Beautiful

  • Wow, I must say my interest is piqued, which I don't believe would've happened had you just said Tomb Raider reboot.

P.S. don't tell anybody, but it sounds like Annette's article is just what I've been looking for. Odd/lame/whatev as it may sound, good fitness software could be what gets me over the fence on Kinect.

    Shhh...

*On a second look at that wrap around, I've gotta say I'm pretty keen on the idea of Lara using a bow (or yk, me using a bow as Lara).
  • Goodness gracious. They made her look human, finally. Of course, this is assuming the lower half is also realistically proportioned. :P

  • Looks cool. :)

  • excited. Although I enjoyed the last two installments to the franchise.

  • Why not give her a cigarette(DMC5) and call this Tomb Raider 10?

  • This might be the first Tomb Raider game I play.

  • Wow that looks amazing, I can't wait to get it.

  • That is one scarred chick lol!

  • The cover looks amazing...but how many times are they going to "reboot" Tomb Raider? The series feels like it's being run into the ground.

Still, I have hopes for this one. Even though it looks like yet another "gritty" reboot.

  • Another really awesome cover and it's good to see a high-profile announcement after not having any new games featured in last months cover.

  • Mod
awesome. just awesome. was trying to think who she reminds me of, and i think it's hilary swank. anyway, can't wait to get it
  • For the first time since the original Tomb Raider, I'm actually interested in seeing more of what this is about. Definitely loving the new look; much more natural-looking, though still very attractive.

I just hope they choose some slightly more isolated, exotic locations.

  • *tilts his head* I honestly never thought those holding the keys to Lara would ever get it that she needs a rebirth, of sorts. Consider my interest piqued.
  • There is only one word that can describe this.

    Yes.

  • Looks amazing. Another great cover GI!

  • First Devil May Cry now Tomb Raider. I guess emo hair is the way to reboot franchises. Maybe it could work for Medal of Honor.
