[Update] Move Ships 4.1 Million Units Worldwide

by Meagan Marie on Dec 01, 2010 at 02:30 AM

[Update] Speaking to GameSpot, Sony clarified that the 4.1 figure represents units shipped, not sold.  "While we don't disclose our exact sell-through number, the key is that our retailers continue to ask for more Move units and are taking every unit we can supply them with based on their sales," said the representative.

[Original Story] Sony’s PlayStation 3 peripheral Move has sold 4.1 million units worldwide since its September 19 release. The full suite of Move products includes the PlayStation Eye, the Move motion controller, and the complementary navigation controller. Sony disclosed that the number is “cumulative” and doesn’t factor in isolated purchases of the Eye or navigation units.

Previously, Sony had announced the shipment of 1 million Move units to Latin America, but hadn’t committed to a solid sales number worldwide. Sony executive Ray Maguire went on record stating that he expected Move sales would be slow to start similar to that of the EyeToy, but that a strong install base would come with time. Even with this in mind, Sony seems pleased with how the numbers have played out.

Bolstered by Black Friday sales, Microsoft’s Kinect has sold 2.5 million units since its November 4 release.
