Is NFL Blitz Following In NBA Jam's Footsteps?

by Jeff Cork on Nov 20, 2010 at 09:22 AM

Back in the day, sports games weren't necessarily about comprehensive rosters, dynamic tackling animations, or down-to-the-millimeter-accurate representations of stadiums. Some of them used to actually be--sorry to use the F work here--fun. Games like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz ruled arcades, giving sports fanatics and casual fans something to root for. NBA Jam just got a long-awaited reboot, and if rumors are true, it looks as though NFL Blitz could be next.

Giant Bomb's Jeff Gerstmann is reporting that he received a call from a trusted source saying that an NFL Blitz revival is currently in development at EA Tiburon. Since EA has an exclusive partnership with the NFL, it does seem logical that "NFL" could once again be tied to the series. In recent years, Midway created a few Blitz games without benefit of such a license. As Giant Bomb points out, NFL Blitz was one of the properties that EA grabbed during Midway's going out of business sale, along with NBA Jam.

EA hired NFL Blitz veteran Mark Turmell back in January, where he works as senior creative director of EA Tiburon's Central Gameplay Group. He did a little consulting work on NBA Jam while it was in development. Maybe he'll be able to flex his talents on this other project. If it's legit, of course.
