Gran Turismo 5 Installs While You Play

We’ve been waiting long enough to play Gran Turismo 5, so thankfully we won’t have to wait for the game to install after we buy it. Gran Turismo 5 installs itself when you’re not looking.

Gran Turismo 5’s install takes up 6.4GB of hard-drive space (that’s one of the largest installs on the PlayStation 3), this equates to almost 40 minutes of looking at a loading screen when you could be behind the wheel of a Mercedes SLS AMG.

Alternatively, players will be able to let the game install slowly while playing. According to Sony, “If users choose not to install the data straight away [the game] will do it in stages as new areas, tracks, etc. are accessed during normal gameplay.”

Gran Turismo is still set to release on November 24, and we’re curious to see if this “slow” install effects gameplay in any way. Whatever the case, it sounds pretty nifty, and we hope other games start utilizing this install trick in the future.

  • That sounds all right, but i would like to see it how it works. Sounds like a good idea, though.

  • "install while you play"? if they can pull that off i'll be impressed for sure dang (6.4GB yikes!)
  • It would be great to have an "install as you play" feature for X-Box games. The first thing I did with Black Ops after opening the package was install it to my hard drive. It totally sucked waiting 20 minutes for the whole thing to install, especially since the only thing I had to look at while it was installing was the dinky black & white game manual that was like 5 pages long. Even a mini-game like Dead-Ops Arcade would have been a great alternative to waiting so long for the game to install. Take note other developers...this is a great idea!
  • Personally, i suggest you do the regular install. Go get a drink and watch an episode of something. Much better than installing a little bit every time you click on something new! For me, at least.
  • That sounds really good but 6.4GB thats a lot but its gonna have lots of content so cant really complain.

  • As long as the quick install does not cause lag in the game, then this is actually a pretty good idea.

  • I heard that it takes up 10GB total after you start playing it.
  • so is the update/patch or wahtever so big because they filled up a blue ray disc or is it because they needed to get the game out before christmas and still needed more stuff.( either way im buying grand turismo 5 for christmas.
  • Sounds like the halo 2 thing for the pc version, already invented and applied on a game years ago, nothing new.
  • Would anyone find it funny if the whole "install while you play" in GT5 was one of the reasons it got delayed. Just think about it for a moment...
  • Sounds good.  Can't wait!

  • the fact that the ps3 requires installs anyway is stupid. Why cant games just play of the disc/cartridge like they have on every other console ever?
  • Didn't Metal Gear 4 do something kinda like that? I remember it would install a little data between each act.
  • This is a cool feature! I hate loading bars when I get a new game that I just want to play!!

  • GT5 is the God of Racing games. Simply the best racing game on the world
  • I think that Split Second had a 7GB install. Am i right?

  • This reminds me of Microsoft's Click-to-Run of Office 2010.  It was nice, because you can have it running while it installs, just like this.

  • Holy smokes thats a big install. Looks like I have to start erasing some PSN demos again!
Wish all PS3 games had install while you play. Sony probably needs to share this info with every other developer.

  • this was done for halo 2 on the PC.

I would not recommend doing this, just wait for it to install the 6.4GB

  • Neat.
