Become A Real Racer With Gran Turismo Academy

by Matthew Kato on Nov 16, 2010 at 04:00 AM

Gran Turismo 5 aims to be the ultimate racing simulator, and now you can take what you've learned in the game and apply it to the real world. Sony and Nissan are teaming up for GT Academy – a chance for you to race your way onto a real international race team with actual cars.

Your journey to becoming a race driver starts by registering for the competition (registration runs from December 6th through January 23rd). Entrants will race in regional online time trials starting on December 20th through January 23rd in pre-selected Nissan vehicles on specific tracks. You can race these as many times as you want in order to post your best score on the regional and national leaderboards. All participants will receive DLC for their efforts, and other prizes (including racing wheels, a full racing simulator, copies of Gran Turismo PSP, and more) will be available the further you progress. Additional tournament rounds will cull the number of racers in each of the four national regions until the best 16 in the entire country advance to the National Finals.

For the National Finals, the remaining 16 racers will go through GT Academy boot camp where they will get behind the wheel of real Nissan cars and learn what it takes to become a race driver. Various competitions will produce a single GT Academy champion who will then get a spot on a race team and compete in an actual race. The National Finals will be filmed as part of a multi-episode reality show for the Speed channel.
