Nintendo Will Talk Wii Successor When Current Installed Base Hits 45M

Sounds like the only big hardware release from Nintendo that we'll have to look forward to is the 3DS. Because the current Wii has been a success holiday after holiday, and with huge releases this year with Mario Galaxy 2, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and DK Country Returns, there's a chance we won't see a replacement anytime soon. According to Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime, the company is still looking to sell more Wii's before moving on to something next-gen.

"As we sit here today we're saying the Wii has many, many more units to sell," he told Kotaku. "After we've reached an installed base of 45 million here in the U.S., we can have a conversation about the next generation."

Fils-Aime says Wii sales peaked in its third year with more than 30 million Wii's in homes. When asked if we could be seeing a successor come holiday 2011, Fils-Aime replied: "No."

Do you think the Wii is about due for an upgrade? Or are you happy with what you've got?

  • so, in the terms of sales. We have to wait a year and a half before the even start PLANNING a new console? well then, let's hope they don't make a...."AO" accessory for it...
  • I really see no need for an upgrade to ANY system at the moment. Where we're at graphics-wise and technologically is perfect in my opinion. Don't feel like spending $500 on new systems just for better graphics.
  • I'd rather them not worry about making a new console...because if they do, it'll get Microsoft and Sony to start thinking about it too, well before they should. I would be extremely happy to not see a new console for at least another 5 years.
  • I'm sorta happy with my Wii right now, the same goes for my 360 and PS3 as well, besides the 3DS, I'm not spending another penny on new hardware.

  • The Wii is going to need an upgrade if Nintendo wants to keep up with Sony and Microsoft.  I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo announces a new console next year and then release it a few years later.

  • I don't think anybody can be happy with the Wii. No just joking, i've had fun with my Wii. It's currently collecting dust but it served me well with Super Paper Mario,Galaxy[haven't gotten around to playing 2], and Brawl. I think that before they move up though, they need to rethink the games that are being released for the Wii. [Babysitting Mama= More people karate chopping their children]
  • An upgrade would be NICE. Nintendo needs something new, cuz I am getting tired of having to swing my hand EVERY TIME I want to slice a dude in pieces with my chainsaw arm on MadWorld.

  • well i think tha the wii we have now is oka but i would liket to see some new changes not saying a total new makeover or anything im saying like a impovement

  • How many Wiis have been sold?
  • The current generation of consoles has a good 3-4 years left to it; most agree that the old pattern of a new console every 5 years simply doesn't apply anymore. Improving the graphics and jacking up the processor speed isn't enough for a new platform; console manufacturers will have to be creative in how they push gaming forward.
  • The Wii needed an update about 5 minutes after it was released
  • I personally would like to see nintendo make a gaming platform that can compete with the PS3 and 360, and I dont mean in sales, but with hardcore gaming. THAT would be awesome.

  • Don't have a Wii. Never will

  • QUICK, EVERYBODY BUY A WII FOR SOMEONE THIS CHRISTMAS! The faster we hit the 45 mil mark, the faster next gen starts. No doubt they have something planned that'll force Sony and Microsoft's hands...
  • O most defiantly.Personally I've felt it needed an upgrade since the day it was launched.I've owned one or had one in my home nearly since launch and have always felt it it was outdated and in need of a overhaul. Since the first time i picked up the controllers, and started waggling them around instead of simply, and more importantly precisely hitting a button. The graphics have always been a joke. There are cell phones out that offer higher resolution gaming and movies for Christ sakes. All this is especially true now that the PS MOVE and to a lesser extent(imho) kinect is out.I know MOVE gets labeled as a "wii clone" or " A hd wii" but both of those couldn't be farther from the truth. As i stated i own a wii and i now own PS MOVE.There is absolutely nothing about it's precise one to one movements and control schemes. That even begins to remind me of the waggle fest controls on the wii.Comparing the two and calling the move a clone is a joke.I mean maybe a genetically altered and enhanced clone.
  • I agree, I don't want to plunk down another $500+ for a graphical upgrade.

Because you know if Nintendo does it, by rule Sony and Microsoft must copy.

  • Duh, who else is tired of having a Gamecube 1.5?

  • Idk i'm actually really pleased with Wii's last few releases. Kirby's Epic Yarn was incredible and we have Donkey Kong coming out so soon, not to mention Epic Mickey and Zelda. If we can continue to get games like this I'm down for continuing with the Wii. All they really need is a better online service and HD visuals. I personally am really very happy with the consoles that are out from all three companies, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo. I'd like to see a lot more work come out of these before it's time to abandon all of our expensive hardware and move on.
  • I think like a lot of people here I wouldn't mind a new gen of wii if it weren't for the fact that MS and Sony would HAVE to upgrade as well. But as much fun as I have/had with my wii it is very difficult for me to switch from watching anything in HD (Pc@1920*1200, Ps3, 360, movies or even tv) to playing the wii. The graphics just look horrible on some games (No More Heroes) when you're used to everything at a 720p minimum

  • yes we need better graphics and performance
