Star Trek Online Could Go Free To Play

Last month developer Cryptic Studios announced that their one-year-old MMO, Champions Online, was going free to play. The company has recently announced that if the game's new business model proves successful, they may make their other MMO, Star Trek Online, free as well.

"We're not sold one way or the other with Star Trek yet," Jack Emmert, Cryptic's CEO told Eurogamer."If people want Star Trek to go free-to-play then get in and play Champions and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message."

Emmert goes on to explain that it depends on more than just his say whether this will happen. He also says that Cryptic is impressed with Dungeons & Dragons Online's free to play success, and that they would like to share the same success.

If Star Trek Online's possible free to play transition happens, we may be able to expect a structure similar to Champions Online, which accepts all comers but charges a price for premium content.

  • Sweet! I might actually check it out if it does go free :)

  • Captain's Log:

    Star Date: 2233-04

The crew and I were forced into recently engaging the Imperial forces. With a much smaller budget and a smaller built-in fan base, we didn't stand a chance. Turns out a blaster truly is superior to a phaser gun. At least that debate has been settled.

We can no longer go into warp speed after our hyperdrive was damaged in the attack, and our shields are only operating at 13%. The enterprise only survived the battle by hiding against one of the enemy Star Destroyers (turns out that was a really good idea). Our only hope is to create a bigger force by allowing new students of Star Fleet to attend free of charge. Only then will we have an advantage.

This is James T. Kirk, signing off.

  • I always wanted to play this, but I don't like spending money to play a game when I already paid to buy the game. If it goes free to play, I might play it.

  • So how would they make money?? There has gotta be somthing that would give them some kinda revenue...

  • I wanted to try, this game but didn't want to have to pay $50 plus the subscription fee, so if this actually happens I might finally be able to try it.

  • If it goes free to play, I would definitely start playing it again.

  • if it goes free to play....   what happens to all the people that bought the hundred somethin dollar lifetime subscriptions?    refund?    rediculous in-game bonuses?    ignored?

  • The same 40 people who played APB briefly will be enjoying this as well.

  • looks cool but most star trek games suck

  • If it goes free i will give it a try

  • If it goes free i will give it a try.

  • I got STO when it came out had some fun with it, but its not good enough to justify a monthly fee.

  • I'm a huge Trek fan, but this game repulsed. Cryptic had great source material for an MMO, but churning it through a breakneck development cycle with cobbled together mechanics from their previous (and also mediocre) releases seemed to guarantee failure right from the start. A few of my friends were a bit braver than I, but my lack of faith was quickly vindicated by their canceled subscriptions. However, I understand that things have improved marginally since release, and that a lot is expected from the next major patch, assuming its still coming. If STO were to go free to play, that is about the only circumstance under which I'd give it a chance. If they managed to impress, I'd pay for the bells and whistles, but they'd have to present no risk entry in order to get my attention.

  • Cool! I hope this becomes the future of mmo's!

I've been wanting to play dc universe online... maybe that will go ftp

  • There is a demo of Star Trek Online already available. Having gone through the trouble of actually playing through the demo, this is one game that can only benefit from a free-to-play model. Cryptic already has a cash shop for STO and gamers can buy outfits, emotes, races, bridge officers, and ships. I can only hope that Cryptic implements a system similar to Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online where players can earn tokens in-game to make purchases in the cash shop.

  • Won't stop the game from being weak sauce, even by free standards.

  • Live long...and free?  WIN!
