The lights are on
We get a lot of press releases here at Game Informer, most of which are kind of awful. No, we're not interested in buying an island home with a 40-car garage. No, we're not interested in interviewing Snooki. Yes, we want to impress the ladies, but no, not by ingesting mysterious pills sold by someone who thinks numbers can be used interchangeably in words. Anyway, that's why we're especially happy to get things that are cool (and game related) in our inboxes.
Evil Controllers has devised a workaround to the dreaded Xbox 360 d-pad, which could be interesting to a lot of people. Unlike the original pad, which is a mushy mess (or the redesigned one, which is merely an elevated mushy mess), Evil's solution is to do away with the d-pad entirely and replace it with four discrete buttons. It's a little like the N64's c-button cluster, only these are bigger and are on the left side.
Evil says this eliminates accidental directional presses, is more accessible to disabled gamers, and will impress your friends. It's certainly more expensive than stock controllers ($55 for wired versions and $75 for wireless), but it could prevent a lot of headaches.
It's almost enough to make us forget that these are the same guys behind this kind of stuff...

I kinda want this for Gears 3
But how does this work for games like Fallout where you need the "in-between" directions? Do you now need to click both the left and bottom buttons on the new controller instead of pressing in between the buttons like on the original d-pad? Because that seems like it would make it more of a hassle to access those quickslot items in fallout.
yeah, I won't be getting this. those analogs have no concave. When given the choice, I like my thumbs to sink in
Why do they have squiggly lines on them? Do you hit two to go diagonal?
Are they serious with the $349 for the "ultimate" that is "on-sale" for $199?! I understand modding is a big industry, but $200 for a controller is a bit over the top to me.
Though, some people will go to just about any length to gain an advantage (read that cheat) in multiplayer FPS games.
The "handicapped" advertisment on the site is about as legtimate as "water pipes" in a hemp shop.
Still - it's good to see that someone is still thinking creatively out there, and not repackaging stock items with new paint jobs.
I don't like it, nor do I support their company. I think I'm going to try out the new xbox controllers. I like the look and the more concave analogs.
i've honestly never had a problem with the d-pad. and this looks worse for the no inbetween.
Looks like the joysticks have rounded tops instead of concave ones. Lame!
May have to give them a shot when I get some extra money.
Hmmn, looks really innovative, but I've not had any problems with my d-pad on my original controller >.< And yes, I use it for fighting games.
The design is pretty nice, but just like @KUJOtheSLOTHMAN said, I don't think it would be compatible with certain games such as Fallout 3.
Okay, but how do you do diagonal input? It'd suck to be playing Fallout or something and accidently use a healing item or switch weapons when trying to access a diagonally placed hotkey.
Doesn't solve anything, since now you have no way to access the diagonals needed for games like FallOut 3 for quick weapon loadouts, etc.
I'm inclined to agree with the diagonalists here. It's a cool concept, but as far as I can tell it's a step down in the diagonal department. As annoying as the 360's D-Pad is, it seems to be one of the best diagonal inputs I've had access to. So unless there's a dimension to this not shown in the picture, it seems to be just as flawed as the normal d-pad.
Meh! The D-Pad doesn't take away from my game play and I've had no problems with it. Especially not enough to shell out extra money for such a strange looking controller.
I'll take microsoft's crappy D-pad over these guys any day. This company is a joke. We make modded controllers for the kids who need an advantage to stand a chance. Morons.
No problems with my controller
