10 Years Of PS2 Memories

by Matthew Kato on Oct 27, 2010 at 03:46 AM

With 10 years and 146 million units behind it, the PlayStation 2 is an icon in video game history. Sony is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the system's North American release, and we want to know what you were doing those many years ago.

The platform came out to a enraptured audience the previous year in Japan, and the PS2's debut in the U.S. also caught fire with gamers. News of store sellouts only heightened the excitement as the console was in short supply after its first day on sale.

Did you manage to snag one in all the madness? What games did you get? Tell us your PS2 launch stories in the comments section below.

I was fortunate enough to get mine on day one because a few units were offered to us here in the office. I wasn't that interested in the launch lineup of games, particularly after I previewed some of the Japanese releases like Evergrace, Eternal Ring, Summoner, Kessen, etc. and wasn't impressed. So, I basically was paying $300 to play Madden NFL 2001. If I remember right, I think I thought SSX was kind of cool, but for some reason that series has never totally done it for me.

Although many PS2's ended up having various problems through the years, I still have mine and it still works. In fact, it's being used right now as a second DVD player down in my exercise room.
