[UPDATE] Minecraft Website Attacked

The official Minecraft site has been hacked by a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. The strange thing is, the alleged perpetrator did it to get more Minecraft!

If you go to the site, it looks perfectly normal until you try to log in. Then nothing happens. This also prevents people from buying copies of the alpha version.

The MTV Multiplayer blog says the supposed culprit posted a message on the 4chan forums claiming that the attack is "a clear message of how the future of minecraft [sic] will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks."

Hopefully, this mess gets cleared up soon. Stay tuned for any developments on Minecraft creator Notch's blog.

[UPDATE]

The full unedited 4chan quote courtesy of DIY Gamer:

"Minecraft is currently experiencing a stimulation provided by us.

It’s purpose is to send Notch a clear message of how the future of minecraft will turn out unless he gets to work, namely by influencing the amount of sales taking place, due to the attacks.

Start providing your customers with the updates that you promise them.

We have roughly 83,000 bots available, and preserved for this seizure, we could if we wanted to keep this going for weeks, however we have decided to give it a week, and see whether or not your attitude, and commitment will change, we believe it will when money stops rolling in for the time being…

anyhow, no we’re not from roblox, or any other minecraft clone, not to mention none of us have been around 4chan for years, and nor has any real 4channers for that matter, its all newfags now, and has been for quite a few years.”

  • Ouch indeed.

  • Well, that's ironic...

  • Well, that's ironic...

  • Despicable, there is another way to prove the person's worth.

  • 4chan, of course. I'm surprised he didn't ask for Battletoads.

  • Does that statement actually make sense to any of you? It's all.. backwards nonsensical English. He who? Influence the sales how? Wtf is he talking about..  :(

  • No wonder I was having trouble connecting to the server. I'm personally going to find this person and feed him to a slime.

    Also, this article isn't complete.

That adds a little more light on what's going on and how crazy these people actually are... apparently it's a group.

These people need to get a life. This man worked by himself to bring you something you loved, and this is how you repay him? Cutting off his income and ransoming the website to him for updates along with taking the game away from numerous other people who enjoy it? Disgusting.
  • message didnt make much sense really, he is also a loser if you want a job fill out a resume, and why ruin the experience for everyone else?

  • You know, I'm generally pretty sympathetic to the point of view of the pirates out there.  I understand, and often even support their efforts.  I don't participate, I don't download illegally, and I don't use keys or hacks to make games that I didn't purchase work on my PC.

But then some dumb *** goes and does something like this, and gives the rest of the pirates and the hackers and the video-gaming freedom fighters out there a bad name.

We're talking about an indie developer here.  With a team of six.  Real people with real lives who probably don't have time to pump out new content every second of every day.  This guy, or this team of guys -- these people who've hacked Minecraft -- they're pathetic.  And stupid.  And cruel.

  • Once this gets fixed my brother can finally stop complaining! =D

  • Why do people have to be such jerks? : /

  • He sure showed them.

  • release your grip on the minecraft site you fiend

  • I think I suck at Minecraft.

  • I SEE YOU TROLL

  • Maybe a Minecraft player will re-create this event in the game.  Now that would be much cooler than a stupid calculator.

  • ... that's unfortunate. However, if they keep it up, couldn't notch just stop everything and make them see who really is in charge? He doesn't necessarily NEED minecraft's income- he can get a decent job at least in one place after people hearing of how successful he is. Then again, with the economy- but still, they don't realize he doesn't HAVE to update this just because they hacked it.

  • and the hackers timing is horible too. less than a week away from a huge update. what a fool.
