Steam Reaches 30 Million Accounts

Back when Valve's digital distribution service, Steam, popped into existence in 2003, I couldn't imagine using it. Jump ahead six years, and Steam is the primary choice for many gamers, myself included, to do their PC gaming. Valve showed just how popular they are today by announcing that they've hit the 30 million mark for number of Steam accounts.

Valve revealed some further stats to go with this impressive accomplishment. For example, in the last year new user growth on Steam has climbed by 178% and sales have increased by more than 200%. The service now has over 1200 games available, over 200 of which use advanced Steamworks functionality such as Achievements and multiplayer through Steam. Over six million users log onto Steam every day, with an all-time peak of over three million users at once.

Valve president Gabe Newell said Steam is "on track to record the biggest year in its six-year history." Congratulations to Valve for the accomplishment!

  • Take that Blizzard! :D haha

  • Now if only Valve would make Half Life 3, but good for them.

  • Upward and onward, to the future!

  • congratulations to steam! now i just have to get a computer that can handle games.....

  • i accidentaly created 2.  I wonder how many other people have 2.

  • I'm not sure what steam reaally is. Last pc game I played was doom

  • Some dont use their and some have 2 but it should still be way above 20 mill active users.

  • Valve should totally celebrate with another massive sale.

  • I like the service and the conveniences that Steam offers, but I don't like having to connect to it just to play a game that's installed on my hard drive, that's rather annoying sometimes.

  • cool :)

  • Saturos... there is offline mode...... if you try and log in w/o an internet connection you are given that option of offline mode, so you can game w/o being online.

  • Loads of the users have more than 1 account...

    I, for example, have 6 >.<

  • I was actually just trying out Half-Life 2: Deathmatch for the first time... Pretty wacky and disorganized online FPS...

    Congrats to Valve, anyway!

  • power to em, can only mean good things

  • Congrats Valve...

But just don't ever see myself PC gaming... I'm always gonna go for console gaming just cus it's so much... more...

  • Steam is amazing.  They deserve credit for doing everything right, and all so smoothly and easy to manage.

  • Was goina say I'm a big fan of steam's ease of connecting with friends and such over games but NO. Just picked up my Fallout:New Vegas copy (for PC) from gamestop at 12:01 in the morning but Steam won't allow the game to be installed because it's not 12:01 Pacific yet! So "Steam cannot install Fallout:New Vegas yet because the game hasn't been released...""This game will release in 3 hours""Go qq some more." Nerdraging I know, but still ain't right.

  • I love steam.  Especially around Christmas time when they tend to have huge sales.

  • Way to go Mr. Newell and everyone at Valve.  Keep it going, but stop trashing XBL.

  • So.....what do we get hmm?
