Blizzard Suing StarCraft II Hackers

by Phil Kollar on Oct 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM

With all the drama this past week over cheating in StarCraft II, it's no surprise that Blizzard is taking more steps toward fixing the problem than just some Battle.net bans. Blizzard has filed a lawsuit against three programmers who created and sold hacks for their popular real-time strategy game.

GameSpot brings news of this suit against the three hackers known as "Permaphrost," "Cranix," and "Linuxawesome." According to Blizzard, this group created hacks for the game "just days after release," and the damage done was "immediate, massive, and irreparable."

Of the three hackers named in the suit, two live in Canada and one lives in Peru, but the StarCraft II end-user license agreement says that all disputes related to the game must be settled by a court within Los Angeles County. If Blizzard is successful in the lawsuit, the programmers would be required to pull their hacks from any site that distributes within the court's jurisdiction.

We'll update when there's more info on this case. It's always interesting to see those rare times when developers go past banning people from their service and take it to the courts. Do you think Blizzard has a shot at succeeding in this case?
