Major Nelson: No Xbox Live Friends Limit Increase Next Update

Today, rumors spread that the cap on Xbox Live Friends lists would be raised from 100 to 1000. Joystiq broke the story, which originated from a now-deleted status update posted by the official German Xbox Facebook account. The website caught wind of the the post, ran it through Google translator, and got these results:

The post itself seems pretty clear, but things soon got a little muddier when Microsoft blogger and spokeman Major Nelson weighed in via his Twitter account, saying, "Let me straighten things out: We will not be expanding the friends list as a part of the next Xbox LIVE Update." Sadly, it looks like those waiting for a higher limit on their Friends list will have to wait a little while longer, as it's not being increased in the upcoming Fall update to Xbox Live. However in a subsequent tweet, he seemed to leave the door open for a possible increase sometime in the future: "However, we’re always listening to member feedback and looking at new ways to enhance the service. Thanks."

What do you think? Is 100 Xbox Live Friends too few? Is 1000 too many? Are you sick of waiting for an increase?

  • I guess that sort of sucks, but not for me personally, I don't have anywhere near the max right now xD

  • Bummer.

  • i barely even talk to my friends on xbox live, so i dont really see the point. . . i mean what does having 1000 friends mean? that youre popular?

  • There is a limit? And some people have reached it??

  • Oh
  • I would have loved this before but as of now it is not necessary. It would be useful for those who play a variety of games and want to "spy" on people. 150 would be nice in my opinion. 200 Maximum. :)

  • it seems like one of the easiest thing to do, don't know why they're waiting so long.

  • Why would you want 1000 friends anyways! Everytime someone signs on Live notifies you that this certain person is on and with just 100 friends it already is non-stop notifications of invites, sign ons and the ocassional achievement here and there but imagine 1000!

  • It doesn't affect me cause I only have a few friends on there, but for people who play Halo and MW2 every day it seems ridiculous that they're limited to only 100 friends in this day and age.

  • Wow, you think they would just make it around 200-500 friends not 1000 most people don't keep in contact with most of their friends and delete them after a while anyways

  • To me, this is like them saying "It's called Xbox, not FaceBox. Get used to it."

    This makes me happy.

  • For some reason, none of my friends can see when I'm online, ever. I don't have the preference selected to say I'm offline either, it just happens. But overall, I actually like it that way. Before I had this problem, I hated being interrupted in the middle of an awesome quest in Fallout 3 to play Halo 3 with my friends. I like Halo, and I do play multiplayer in certain games, but I'm generally a solo gamer. I have about 12 friends, all of whom I know in real life.

  • dont even need one hundred ive got like 13 frends... most are my real friends or relitives

  • I don't even care, I have like 6 friends.

  • I personally don't care. There are few people that actually have 100 XBL friends they actually play with or talk to.

  • no, I've got like 11 friends

  • i dont really care,but a friend finder is kinda cool..i guess.
i also have 100 friends but i dont even talk to them. i dnt even know why i added them! But i have like 8-10 actual friends and relatives online.
  • i could car less since i only have like 30 some friends.

  • I imagine the only way people have reached this limit is if they add anyone they play with, if they're running MW2 mod lobbies, or if they're a famous person that's made their xbl handle known. Probably a GI writer who accepts friend requests from readers would max out their list pretty fast as well :P

    *edit: also this

  • really....who is pushing 100 "friends"?  people asking for this really dont know these people or have real friends to consider in their day to day thoughts.  major Lolz!
