Winners Of Michelle Obama’s Healthy Apps Initiative Announced

“Apps for Healthy Kids” is the name of an initiate started by First Lady Michelle Obama, in which she challenged app creators to develop aids to help kids eat right. Now those winners have been announced, and the apps are rather intriguing.

Winner of first place is Trainer, an app that promotes physical activity through training virtual pets. Other runners up include Fitter Critters, Food Hero, and Smash Your Food. The latter actually allows you to explode virtual food and uncover its unhealthy components.

  • lame waste of time and my money

  • Her heart's in the right place, but I don't see this going anywhere. Virtual pets haven't been popular since the mid-late 90's. Seems like they're going for a Pokemon angle, which also hasn't been popular since the mid-late 90's.

But hey, i'll let my kids give it a shot.
  • I'm glad to see the first lady using video games to help kids lose weight.  My question is why these young kids have droids, iphones, or ipods that can use these apps.  Maybe we should address that issue as well.  I played video games when i was a kid but it always came second to going outside. What happened?

  • Filed under: games that aren't fun

    :-)

That just about sums it up...

  • Why do i have a feeling if i played Smash Your Food that i would want to go blow up a Big Mac instead of eating healthy. Well might as well give it a shot.

    5 hours later...

OK nobody panic but if anyone sees on the news about a kid accidentally blowing up a McDonalds, i swear it wasn't me.

  • Mod
Pitting Grape-man against Man-otter really has me craving a salad with light rasberry vinegerrete.
  • Hey at least shes not as bad as obama

  • Sounds like some nice creations, but I doubt they have any fun factor or any qualities of a well-developed game.

  • Why play terrible apps when you can play FOOD WAR!
  • Why is that hamster fighting a Pikmin?

  • Fail... so easy a child could do it...
  • ummmmm......isnt it eat on your food on the table and go outside for an hour? whos meant to be doing these. I think their called parents..........

  • Pretty cool. Its nice that Obama is recognizing Videogames for their true imptortance through events like these.

  • *Generalized negative comment about current administration* Yay, now I can fit in.

  • I don't think youngsters should even own a device that uses apps. I think parents need an app that teaches them how to balance their children's use of time in general. Parents have become such push-overs.

  • ill give this page 5 comments before somebody says something political...

  • Maybe her heart is in the right place but she should have just done it better.

  • Nice to see someone in the political forum doing something to promote gaming and wellness, not just blaming games on obesity and every other problem in society. You may not think its useful, but its a great start none the less, you have to admit.

  • I'm sorry Mrs. Obama why don't you just go to the schools and have longer recess time, and better phys ed. programs since that's what will help with stopping the obesity epidemic.  Forcing kids to eat better (which she is spending OUR money to takeover the parent's job) (don't mean to add politics to the mix but their is a point) won't help because kids will want to do it more.  Let the kids/parents decide.  Plus kids will either bring junk food to school/eat it at home.  The focus stupid testing and not fixing playgrounds is what's preventing kids to be active.
