You Are To Blame For The 3DS Price Point

This week, Nintendo announced that the 3DS will cost 25,000 Japanese yen (about $300). Does that seem a little too expensive to you? Then maybe you shouldn't have been so excited about the device after its E3 reveal.

Speaking to Bloomberg (via andriasang), Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata explained that the price tag of the 3DS was set based on several factors, one of which was the enthusiastic reception the system received at this year's E3.

In other words, everyone tipped their hand by showing how much they wanted the 3DS, and Nintendo has decided that you're probably willing to pay a premium for the new handheld.

So, there you have it. Never be impressed by anything. Harden your heart, and everything will turn out better.

  • ...Oops?

  • ***************************** that's all I have to say

  • Well can't say it is bad marketing.

  • LOLWUT?

I literally cannot fathom why anyone would pay 300 dollars for this, and I love my DS. Are people really that excited about 3D? Cause I don't really see the point.

  • wow! they are putting their handheld at a higher price than their wii. lolwut?

  • It's not gonna be $300 here, everything cost more in non U.S. countries cause they don't have our sales base. It'll most likely cost $250, but it's not unfathomable that it might cost even less.

  • Yes, a lot of people were probably excited because of the innovative technology that the 3DS strived to provide.
But it was usually expected of Nintendo to make their products affordable to the typical person, regardless of the new technology implemented, so I'm sure that most people were ecstatic because of the probability that Nintendo would release such an innovating product at a reasonable price.
$299 was way too steep of a decision. Will millions of people buy it regardless? You bet. But are a ton of people set back by the price and are probably not going to purchase it until the price is dropped by $100? Most definitely.
  • I'm sorry Joe! You don't have to blame ME!! GOD! *** *** ***!!!

  • me??? I didn't go to E3, I didn't wright all the articals about how wonderful the 3DS is. You did( media )so dont blame us.

  • but how can I pretend not to want it, not even a trained, professional actor could pull that off

  • Lmfao true kinda like at work when you show them you can do more than what you can normally handle it basically says we can give you more work and you can handle it lmao.. Still if it's 300 bucks I won't be buying it anytime soon

  • Sorry Nintendo, but I would rather spend that much on a PS3.  At least then I could watch Blu Ray disks.  I'm sorry but no hand-held should cost that much.  Way to gouge the consumer Nintendo.

  • what a deuce! That is the most cold response i have heard on price! Becuase they can? They are becoming APPLE now!!!! I hate those #### but still pay their prices for the ipod... so what does that say?

it says greedy ##### can get more money simply because they are on top to make the decisions to make it so

    #####

  • It aint going to be cheap but it wont be that expensive here seeing as ive seen 60$ video games here in America go for 80 - 90 in Japan as standard price.

EDIT: Also when you see a new product start booing.
  • Thanks for the advice Joe. Consider my heart hardened.

  • "Never be impressed by anything. Harden your heart, and everything will turn out better."

Words I've lived by my entire life ^^

  • Why not $300?  Sony is charging us $100 for an ice cream cone, and Microsoft is charing us a paltry $150 to dance around without any controllers.

Is a hand-held device capabale of providing 3D images for games/movies without glasses for $300 that far out of the realm of reality?

Either way, I'm still not buying it.  I don't hve a need of a mobile gaming platform.

  • Yup, sounds about right. Nintendo has made a fortune selling rehashed items with minor improvements for high prices since everyone keeps buying them. Why would this be any different?

  • That's kinda ridiculous. You'd think Sony would have priced the PSP Go at $30 with that kind of pricing model.

  • considering th technology built in and the huge amount of value you seem to get with it(3D without glasses, who doesn't want it!!!!????), it seems like a very reasonable price to me. Who knows, Nintendo could potentially price it $50 dollars cheaper here in the states.
