Latest New Vegas Dev Diary Sheds Spotlight On Art Direction

by Jeff Cork on Sep 30, 2010 at 04:00 AM

One of the most striking differences between Fallout: New Vegas and its predecessor, Fallout 3, is how visually distinct they are from one another. Fallout 3 introduced players to the Capital Wastelands, a broken version of Washington D.C. and its surrounding area. It looked great for a ruined wasteland, and it was more than dreary enough. New Vegas' version of a retro Las Vegas is a completely different experience, both in content and how it's visually represented.

In the following developer diary, the team at Obsidian talks about how the setting allowed them to do some interesting things with the game's art direction. (For one, they could actually use bright colors.) There's a lot of in-game footage, so there's something for you even if you don't geek out to seeing reference photos and how they helped drive the artists.
