Zombies Coming To Black Ops? UPDATE: Yep!

by Jeff Cork on Sep 29, 2010 at 07:10 AM

9/29 UPDATE: Yep, it's happening. While the teaser site basically confirmed it, we have an official press release making it super-official. “Zombies have been such a hit with our community that we were committed to bringing brand new zombie experiences to Call of Duty: Black Ops,” said Treyarch studio head, Mark Lamia. “We’ve taken extra special care to retain the essential ingredients of our Zombie game, and have also crafted a nice surprise for the fans.”

The press release also brings up a six-player cooperative mode called "Combat Training." No other information is given outside of the fact that it will pit players up against A.I. It could be assumed that this mode will play similarly to Battlefield's Onslaught mode, but we'll have to wait and see.

9/28 UPDATE: The existence of a zombie mode in Black Ops is no longer just a rumor. Today, Activision revealed a teaser site that basically confirms the presence of zombies. You can see the site for yourself at gknova6.com to experience the full effect (complete with sound effects), or check out our screen capture below:

ORIGINAL STORY:
One of the biggest surprises in Call of Duty: World at War came in the form of its Nazi Zombies minigame. It was essentially a horde mode, in which players holed themselves up in shacks and battled waves of the undead, fortifying the shelter between rounds. Treyarch has been oddly quiet as to whether it would include the mode in the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops, though recent evidence may have spoken for the developer.

As Eurogamer points out, online retailers GameStop (Game Informer's parent company) and Play-Asia have posted descriptions of the upcoming Bradygames Call of Duty: Black Ops strategy guide. The product description sections on both sites mention that the book includes something called "Nazi zombie coverage."

It would certainly be odd to devote precious space in a strategy guide to a mode that isn't in that game, but you never know. Is it a typo? Could it be holdover copy from a previous guide? We'll let you know when we learn more.
