Microsoft Thinks Blu-Ray’s Days Are Numbered

Blu-Ray discs have been on the market for a few years now, and the format has certainly caught on with tech heads and many PlayStation 3 owners, but will the format ever reach critical mass among a large consumer audience like DVDs and VHS did before it? Microsoft doesn’t seem to think so.

In a recent interview with Xbox Achievements, UK Xbox head, Stephen McGill said, “Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format. People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay. So, who needs Blu-ray?”

McGill also brought up Microsoft’s decision to exclude a Blu-ray drive from its Xbox 360 system and thereby keep the cost of the unit cheap. “I think people now recognize what a smart decision it was to keep the pricing low,” McGill added.

It’s hard to dismiss McGill comments immediately. Recently legal digital downloads of PC games have exceed the actual sale of disc-based product. On the other hand, we see some merit in having a few Blu-ray discs on our game and movie shelves.

What do you think? Should we start carving Blu-ray’s tombstone now, or has McGill spoken a little too soon?

  • This just shows how stupid MS is.

  • Too soon.

  • What do you expect him to say?  Do you think the UK Xbox head is going to say that something his console doesn't support is amazing and is going to go mainstream?

  • I'm still fine with DVDs.

Mainly because I don't want to re-buy my collection.

  • I think it's always good to have a hard copy, and blu-ray is certainly better than other disc formats out there

  • sorry gates but blu-ray and dvd are here to stay along side digital downloads. some people like having a movie in hand some people like downloads that may or may not include DRM. dvd may eventually die "vhs is still popular for recording security camera footage on lower budgets and wont be going anywhere for a long time" but this is just bill gates blowing smoke out his @ss.

  • I agree actually. I don't think Blu-Ray will ever be as big of a hit as DVDs and VHS. Perhaps it's tombstone time.

  • I don't know about you, but I actually like having a tangible item in my hand when I shell about money for it. CD's, games, movies, and whatnot. That way, I can... oh, I don't know, bring it places? Like to a friend's house to watch it or to somewhere where I can resell it.

Also, and this is overlooked a lot, as long as the technologically impaired still enjoy porn, physical media isn't going anywhere.
  • While Blu-ray may never catch on to the extent of DVDs before digital becomes the norm, it's still the only hard copy option in the digital/1080p era and I'm fine with that, and certainly don't regret investing in my collection.

I love physical copies of things because it's the only way it's ever really yours.  GOG shutting down (although that's turned out to be false in the end) is the perfect example: a website could fold overnight, a harddrive could crash, etc etc.

  • "People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay"

^Truth, and you'd have to think that Sony feels the same, given the existence of the PSPGo. It may have been too soon, but it was undoubtedly a step in the right direction. However, I don't agree that Blu-ray's days are numbered.
  • Wow this makes about as much sense as someone else saying "No one plays FPS on PC anymore..."

Digital downloads are great, sure. That's the only way I purchase my games anymore. But the main issue I run into is BANDWIDTH. Not on my end, but on theirs. To test, I downloaded Mass Effect onto my xbox, then Mass Effect on Steam. XBOX Live's transfer rates must be just ABYSMAL. I got around 1.8MB per second on Steam, it was done in 40 minutes or so? Got through the citadel sequence on the PC before the XBOX was done downloading completely.

  • didnt they say that hd-dvd would beat bluray?? uh... wheres those hd-dvds now ms? most people still like a hard copy in case something goes awry.

  • Well, seeing as the PS3 costs the same as the (better) 360's out there, I'd say it didn't make much of a difference. Look at games like FF13 or the upcoming Rage. One disc on PS3, and the quality of FF13 on PS3 is far better than that of the 360. No, I'm not saying TEH 360 1S TEH SUXXORZ11!!1! I'm just saying that there are examples of blu-ray being superior. Maybe he's still pissed about MGS4...

  • way too soon. and isn't 1080p on blue-ray better than 1080p on hd-dvd?

  • McGill has spoken to soon and although digital sales have increased over the past couple of years, blu-ray has increased in sales as well.  PS3 sales have increased and blu ray sales costs have gone down.  So there is still plenty of time for blu ray to increase.

  • Ever since I switched to Blu-Ray, I won't go to the movies anymore, it is the best picture money can buy.  My only beef is the cost of new movies, other then that, I'm blu-ray all the way.

  • I think it is a fair prediction MS is making. They know what they are talking about. I dont see it going to the grave but do forsee sales declining. Blu ray is great and all but the pricing is a little expensive compared to standard dvds which is the norm.

  • Heck. No.

I honestly hope Digital Download goes away soon, or at least never goes completely mainstream. I love the feeling of ACTUALLY OWNING SOMETHING PHYSICAL.

  • so th next xbox is not coming out wth blue-ray?

  • This sounds mostly like a Company's PR spin. While there may be some truth to the statement (eventually Blu-Ray will give way to something else) MS is not really helping with the digital distribution processes.

For example, you will most likely never see a game on the level of MGS4 available for download (legally). Imagine a PS3 owner had a launch 60GB system.....

While MS is offering larger HDD's they're not making the prices any cheaper. In fact, they're overpriced. Help push for more digital downloads by offering cheaper storage solutions...even though, I still wouldn't buy a First Party HDD from Microsoft, haha.

I also would like to own the physical meduim itself, rather than owning a license to play the game. Then I get to say when I stop playing.
