The lights are on
During Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show press conference, Microsoft Game Studios' corporate vice president Phil Spencer touted Halo Reach's day one sales, saying the title has already brought in $200 million. Spencer also pointed out that Reach is the fastest selling game of 2010. It also bested Halo 3's one-day gross of $170 million.
This is great news for the video game industry, and Bungie and Microsoft respectively, but this day one haul doesn't come close to touching Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's enormous $401 million one day feat. Grand Theft Auto IV also brought in over $300 on its launch day.
Movie companies release box office reports every day. I'd sure like to see the video game industry do the same thing.
Email the author Andrew Reiner, or follow on Twitter, Facebook, and Game Informer.
yes but you are comparing this to two multi platform games. call of duty probably sold better but i dont think that gta4 sold better on xbox than reach did. on day 1 i mean.
Dang! I'm exited to see how much Black Ops. brings in. This is great for the video game market!
Yeah 200 million for one platform, versus GTA's 2 and MW2's 3.
well does the 401 mill and 300 mill day one launch count towards both consoles that those games were released on or just the 360?...
As everyone else has said, are we talking about 401 million for the Xbox alone, or for all 3 systems? Either way, cool, wonder how many units have actually been sold.
MW2 is also on the PC so make that three consoles instead of two
I am glad Bungies swan song is doing so well. I have been playing it for a few hours, despite my problems with the franchise I am having fun.
One problem I am having is new to the franchise. The aiming is not smooth at all. If you just stand still and turn around 360 degrees you will suddenly slow down about 3 times before you complete the circle. It is like the framerate dips 3 times for about a fraction of a second.
It happens so often it is getting annoying. I have tried 3 controllers, and even called some buddies who are having the same problem. It is weird. I have tried it in areas where there are no enemies as well, figuring it may just be slowing down when during my 360 degree turn I face some enemies, but ti still happened.
It can cause your aiming to get thrown off. For instance, you see an enemy and you turn to look at him but your reticule suddenly slows down for no reason and your timing is thrown off. Anyone else experiencing this??
Other than that I am enjoying it. I love the new sound fx for some of the guns. And the A.I. has been improved dramatically.
All I can say is that I'm glad that I added my $60 to that impressive $200 million, I am loving this game! I have yet to play the multiplayer, but the single-player campaign has been impressing me so far, and so much fun!
Kudos to Bungie :)
I was a little surprised at this, but not completely, what I think caught me most off guard was GTA IV earning less then MW2 (it seemed MUCH more popular at the time I guess)
Whatever it still doesnt change the fact that Halo Reach is awesome and is Bungies best game yet for me at least
HALO REACH FTW!!!!
"Grand Theft Auto IV brought in over $300 on its launch day?" WOW! What'd they sell, 5-6 copies??
wow that is still amazing. i can't wait until the day that MW2 is bested though. Good job Bungie!!
I thought this was gonna sell terribly because of the stupid cod fans WHO I WILL NEVER DECLARE TRUE GAMERS!!! whining to their open friends that "halol sux cuz itz less reeliztik then cod" even though cod has people recovering from fatal wounds in a matter of seconds, and i remind you they claim this is "realistic" and halo on the other hand explains it by saying its shields that recharge that are protecting the soldiers. COD fans have no sense of logic
Halo Rewach is so amazing. It may not have brought in as much as call of duty on day one, but halo fans are atleast 20x as dedicated as cod fans. Period. I am one of them. 7th Column FTW!!!!
Expected but still *** nice.
To be fair, CoD and GTA are multiplatform releases. You guys should compare this to, I dunno, Super Mario Galaxy's launch or something, Game Informer.
Well, let's see...
COD came out for both PS3 and Xbox. Halo: Reach is an Xbox 360 exclusive title. Had it come out for PS3 also, it would probably make Microsoft something close to COD's $400 million.
