Return To Silent Hill In 2011

It’s official. Silent Hill 8 is coming to 360 and PS3 next year. What’s known so far about the upcoming psychological romp is that it will be third person, terrifying, and “true to the franchise.”

“In honoring the rich history and strong following of Silent Hill, we’re working hard to build a next generation horror game that the fans truly deserve,” said president of Konami, Shinji Hirano,. “This Silent Hill introduces an all-new storyline and unique evolutions in gameplay, building on innovations and successes from over a decade of true survival horror and terror.”

Previous visitors of Silent Hill have included desperate fathers, confused husbands, stranded truckers, and army veterans. This time an isolated prison inmate named Murphy Pendleton wanders the foggy streets after somehow making it off a bus. Players will use improvised weapons like glass bottles, chairs, and more to fight the monsters that we predict will be very weird looking. Sidequests which change according to gamers’ play style can also be completed.

A compelling storyline is also promised to compliment the psychological terror. Konami claims that the story will “appeal to fans of the early, classic Silent Hill series.” I’m hoping for wacky endings containing aliens and dogs.

What's interesting is that after getting bounced around between Japanese and U.S. studios the series is now being handed off to a Czech studio called Vatra Games. We'll be interested to see how this new studio handles the series unique brand of horror.

  • Great. With this and resident evil 6 it should be a great couple of years in survival horror. Though that studio change might be a problem...

  • ohhh i cant wait! by the way i love the boo tagline XD

  • Great news! I can't wait! Dead Space is the only survival-horror game of this gen that I've played.

I have a question for anyone. Could anyone recommend any survival-horror games of this generation that I should give a go? I've heard the F.E.A.R series is great, and I've considered trying the second one. But any recommendations would be appreciated!

  • Hope it delivers.

  • Funny because "staying true to the franchise" would mean grinding out another ho-hum sequal, not a terrifying one.
G4TV beat GI to this scoop? Get it together Turi!
  • For the person who asked for other good survival horror games, check out Penumbra for the PC and also Amnesia: The Dark Descent (from the same developer). I haven't played either one, mainly cause I don't like playing on PC that much, but they're supposed to be some of the best survival horror games in years, even scarrier than Silent Hill some say.

For console side, check out Siren: Blood Curse (downloadable on PS3) or Deadly Premonition (wacky, David Lynch sort of horror, on 360/PS3 for only $20 new). Again, haven't played either one but they're at the top of my watch list. Gameplay for Deadly Premonition is frustrating/clunky and outdated, but where would a horror game be if it controlled well? The story is supposed to be awesome.

Also, if you're of the newer generation, these classics are must-plays: Silent 2, Silent Hill 3, Resident Evil 2, Fear Effect.
  • Let's hope he's right, I miss the old days of Silent Hill.

  • This is one I would look foward to but wouldn't hold my breath, its too hit and miss on so many levels but the nostalgia factor is enough for my buy.

  • I'm already scared.

  • It would be awesome if they put a random encounter thing with Pyramid Head. Like every so often if you turn around you see his shadow around a corner or like if there is weather you just see him down a random hallway when lightning strikes.

  • The premise of this sounds really cool.

  • Sounds dark and mysterious...

    LiKe MEEEEEEeeeee.....

  • The silence ends... I kind of wish for there to be an ending where the town is finally beaten and it finally stops. Also, Pyramid Head should show us his sweet dance moves.

  • I love the Resident Evil series are the silent hill games any good??

  • Sorry but silent hill burned me with 5. There was no inverted control, and when I contacted konami they pretty much said to hose off; and they wouldn't patch the problem.

After that kind of support for your customer im out.

  • Wow, Silent Hill 8 already, I only own the first two. Guess I'm a bit behind :P

It's good to hear they're going back to the style of the first games. I love those and I heart mixed feelings about the others as it progressed.

  • This could possibly end up being the first Silent Hill game I play, it has my intrest.  I wish Konami was doing it though, I've always heard that Konami was the best (which is no surprise since they were the original developers behind the classis Silent Hill games).

  • "true to the franchise."  I have waited a long time to here those words spoken about a silent hill sequel.

  • "...unique evolutions in gameplay, building on innovations and successes from over a decade of true survival horror and terror.”

God I hope that's true. Konami has done some bold stuff with the series as of late (Shattered Memories says hello), and there have been a ton of horror games to do some innovative stuff lately: The Path, Amnesia: Dark Descent/Penumbra, Eternal Darkness, etc. My point is, there's a way to make a horror game without dumbing it down and turning it into an action game against monsters (*cough* Dead Space and Resident Evil *cough*).

I just really hope that they've been looking at those games, and looking at their own recent Silent Hills. Vatra maybe an unknown studio to us so far, but they have MORE THAN ENOUGH stuff to look at and see what works with Silent Hill and what doesn't.

Oh, and Game Informer, the series has bounced around between Japanese, US and UK studios. Climax did more Silent Hill games than Double Helix, y'know? You should give them more credit.

  • Fabulous.
