Super Replay: Super Mario Bros. 3

http://media1.gameinformer.com/imagefeed/featured/gameinformer/replay/superSMB/supersmbheader.jpg

If one title in the history of the industry specifically targets the nostalgia cortex of gamer's brains, it's Super Mario Bros. 3. It featured far more gameplay variety than the original SMB, and was more of a traditional Mario game than the polarizing North American sequel. It would be a shoo-in for the title of "best 2D Mario" if it weren't for the amazing Super Mario World (a debate we get into during this Super Replay). It's one of the few titles that can stir up fond memories for hardcore gamers and non-gamers alike. It didn't matter if you were a Nintendo nerd, captain of the football team, theater geek, or a cheerleader...you probably played and loved this game.

Most of us played this game two decades ago, but I wanted to see just how well the gameplay holds up in 2010. Join myself and several other GI staffers as we work our way through all eight worlds of Super Mario Bros. 3. No warp whistles!

Hey, it's another Super Replay! Let's all watch it together.
  • This is such a good idea for Super Replay!  I wonder how long World 8's gonna take to clear?  It always takes me forever.

  • it took me like 10 years to beat this game.
  • Dan said 1990. Reiner is the dumb one.

  • Ahh I knew this was coming.

Did anyone see the video of some Japanese guy beating this game in 11 minutes? Here's the link:

    www.youtube.com/watch

  • hmmm good memories form this old fun game big world is always a favorite

  • You should have a challenge for each replay, and the loser must make the winner a sandwich and you should record the whole process so that we can see it lol

  • Way to go Reiner. You wasted the cloud. You failed the Super Replay on its first day. I hope you're proud of yourself.

    j/k, awesome start guys.

  • ALL EDITED FOR PART 4:

Man, after seeing that finale I'm laying off the coffee. Don't feel bad about getting so hyped up during World 8 (especially Bowser's Castle), because I'm sitting here in my comfortable chair watching an internet video and my heart was racing just as fast as yours! I was almost shouting "Yes!" and loudly proclaiming "Noooo!" right along with you guys, and I have to say this final segment was as crazy as Ludwig von Koopa's hair. I mean, man....finding the 1-up on your VERY LAST life, the so close yet so far moments..........this is easily, by far, by A MILE THE SINGLE MOST EPIC REPLAY I've ever seen! Good job to Dan and Ben for hanging in there for some of the most tense gaming moments we've so far given audience to.

Also, to answer your question, should you have failed:

I'd definitely want you guys to post the whole video of you going through it again. Remember, most of us don't tune into these replays just to watch someone beat a game; we watch these to see YOU guys beat the game! It's always the hilarious commentary that keeps us watching. It also seems to make more sense this way, since someone not wanting to see these could simply skip that part of the video, but your awesome gaming triumphs and failures would be lost to us should you choose another way.

All in all, this was an awesome video, and now I'm super-psyched for the future replays to come.

  • I knew this was coming, it wouldn't be right it wasn't a super replay. I noticed Dan plays older games better then the newer stuff lol. I would like to see you guys use a separate camera to record reactions when you guys do replays. It would bring the whole segment to great heights.

Wow, I didn't think Dan was capable of rubbing out another super replay so soon. I was expecting a Mario game.

Are you playing on the NES or through wii ware? I assume NES from Reiner's comment about the controller. (derpo, this gets answered later in the episode. no spoilers for you)

Dan you were right about the hidden note block, Reiner can't jump.

Want more Mario 3? Convince someone on the interwebs to create a level editor. :)

Peanut butter sandwich? Why not peanut butter and jelly?

My strategy for line up mini game was to press the button when the piece before what I wanted was in the middle. So instead of waiting for it to be at the end of the screen, I'd do it when it was at the beginning. But I kept my eyes fixed in the middle. I can't remember if that works or not. :P

I was raised on Game Genie Reiner. Maybe you should have given it a shot for this replay because Dan sat your *** at the back of the class room.
  • you have to chase the airship

  • Edited for End of Super Replay

That was by far the best one so far. It was intense, funny, and very nostalgic. Great job and keep up the great work on these segments. By the way Bowser was way harder than Ludwig Van Koopa, I thought Dan was going to pass out or something it was intense.

    Part 1:

I love how Dan can remember every secret in this and Link to the Past, but can't remember which card had the blue flower from 5 seconds ago. Also that first death was hilarious the water Hammer Bros are the worst. And Dan what do you actually eat? Either way great job on the Super Replay can't wait to see the next episodes.

Favorite World is Giant World for sure. my strategy for Roulette I always clicked when top was on the far left and the the middle in the middle and the last one when it is on the middle. I still play this game and it's nice seeing it in action.

Also Dan did better in general, I mean come on Reiner you wasted the cloud!!!! But in Reiner's defense he did the best in surviving without powers and stuff. And Reiner did get the flower when you guys were debating that earlier.

Good luck on World 8 it's not for the faint of heart.

    Part 2

You guys definitely slowed down on this one. That ice cave level was tense, I was on the edge of my seat when you started running out of time.

    Part 3

Good job, Matt definitely took some time to warm up, but either way you almost finished two worlds.

P.S. At 29:23 in the video you didn't bleep Matt dropping the F-bomb. It's all good though it was pretty funny.
    Edit
  • Great Super Replay guys, Reiner totally blew it with the cloud.  Dan is clearly the winner this time around. lol

  • Are you guy's gonna do the Claire run-through later, or was there not enough interest?

  • When Reiner did well, it was the most impressive. I think that Dan had the more consistent level of decent play, though.

  • the first warp whistle isnt in the castle its in level 3 of world 1

  • I can't blame him for the concentration card, I used to and still do that ALL the time. I blank out completely. Nicely replayed though! Hated that big fish so much.  I used a P-wing for it too.

  • i bought this for wii ware a few months ago but i cant get past  world 7

  • This game is really awesome I'm glad you guys picked it. I feel like I was cheated out of the giant fish level and also Reiner did so many more awesome things, and didn't cheat, so Reiner wins part 1. I'm glad he ruined Dan's chances of skipping another level.

I like that terrifying sun is a tag. Can't wait for more.

Edit That was an awesome episode, I'm glad you guys took turns playing it made it way more exciting. That was a pretty intense ending. Had you guys been defeated you should record it because after awhile it just became watching you guys triumphing over the game rather than seeing the game in its entirety. Good pick again, watching you guys smashing the koopalings (including that jerk Ludwig Von Koopa) and Bowser made me want to play the game again.

What do you guys think of the new Mario All-Stars collection after playing this game? It'd be cool to know after watching your triumph.
