Jonathan Blow's The Witness Was Secretly At PAX

The developer of the acclaimed Braid brought his new game, The Witness, to PAX. However, it was on a nondescript PC that was unattended and unmarked. Why would he do such a thing?

According to Blow, there were several reasons for keeping the public debut of The Witness low-key. His post on the game's blog site reads: "At a show full of companies trying to capture your attention and sell you things, I wanted to do something that is subtle, and a surprise — if you notice it, and decide to investigate, you find something unexpected."

Unlike Braid, The Witness is a fully 3D game that players explore in first-person. Blow also points out that many of the assets are still programmer art, and several of the puzzles are incomplete. In other words, the game isn't done yet, and probably won't be for at least a year.

Head over to Kotaku if you want to see a video of The Witness in action.

  • O wow i would have never done that wouldve missed out on a great game just because this guy wanted to be subtle >.>
But playing as long as you want would have been awesome due to no lines
  • Way to stay under the radar, that's awesome.

  • That's actually really cool of him to make it subtle and sort of hidden. The players who did decide to try out the unmarked booth got a very nice surprise and it seems like it would add a sense of importance and discovery to whoever found it

  • Why be subtle his game is probably good enough to stand with the major releases.

  • Awesome thanks for the news.

  • Naturally, any display near the enormous buzz of "Spyparty," will be overshadowed

  • I bet he just forgot to set up his booth ;P

  • I like this guy, he's unique.

  • i wish braid would come out for psn!

  • Jeaze, one hit and he's gone 'hollywood'.

  • This looks sort of cool. It reminds me of Myst, which I really didn't like, but Blow has never done us wrong before.

  • The game looks good, but I'll have to see where it goes. There looks like there's a limit to what you can do with the maze puzzle.

  • Gotta love him.

  • Okay, that is awesome.

If I had been at PAX, I would have so gone over to that machine. I tend to look at unattended things to figure out what they are, personally.

  • Hmm, does that mean--SHAME ON GI--for not realizing this while you were there?

  • So he's selling his game by pretending to be nonconformist.  He's saying "Hey! Check my game out!  It's indie and subtle!"  What a tool.

  • Awesome news.  The video on Kotaku looks interesting.  I'm interested to see where the game goes with this.

  • I don't know about this Witness deal but Spy Party sounds like GOTY material to me.

  • Cool, I want internet with great service on home.
