Dead Rising: Case 0 Has 300,000 Players

by Joe Juba on Sep 07, 2010 at 01:12 PM

Capcom took a risk with Case 0. Instead of making a free demo for Dead Rising 2, the company charged $5 for Case 0, which gives players a feel for the gameplay while providing content that will carry over to main game. The only question was whether people would pay for small taste of Dead Rising 2. Apparently, the answer is a resounding "yes."

Judging by the online leaderboards for Case 0, over 300,000 players have picked up the prequel. That's not bad for any downloadable game, but it's especially impressive considering that Case 0 has only been out for one week.

Gamers are accustomed to getting their demos for free, but the success of Case 0 demonstrates that paying to get an early sample of an exciting game can be a viable strategy. The trick is to provide worthwhile content. I'd be willing to pay for a condensed, standalone experience that acts as a demo. However, there's no way I'd pay for a regular demo culled straight from the retail version of the game.
