We See Dragon Age II's Rogue In Action

BioWare brought Dragon Age II to PAX, and it would have been rude of us not to check it out. Here are a few thoughts from our time with the game:

  • We got to see the PS3 version in action for the first time. Aside from the obvious controller differences, the game looks identical to its Xbox 360 counterpart.
  • The female version of Hawke was on display for the first time. As with the male version, players can tweak her face in tons of ways.
  • The demo started with a fight between the rogue (shown for the first time at PAX) and about 20 hurlocks. The rogue is appropriately agile, and she can flip over her adversaries. She's armed with a pair of short swords.
  • The rogue can also use a special teleportation attack, which is similar to how Nightcrawler materializes. The rogue can also cloak, toss stun grenades, and rush with both blades when close up.
  • Targets are changed using the D-pad.
  • About 90 percent of the dev team on Dragon Age II worked on Origins.

  • Unless Mages are really awesome, it sounds like I'll be playing a rogue again.

  • Awe I thought this was a video. :(

  • I thought there would be a video in this... :( Anyway sounds awesome. Can't wait till the Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition comes out so I can finally get caught up.

  • i hope the door unlocking skill is for all classes becuase that was something i hated about origins.

  • Saddening. They're yet again distancing themselves from the style of games they created in these successful franchises just to get the attention-span-lacking American masses to flock to it. Yeah, leaping around, throwing shock grenades and stuff is great, but does it belong in a dragon age game? Hopefully they're not forcing it in.. something I feel they flirted with in Mass Effect 2.
  • You know, that dragon up there kinda looks like a... a... buh... Buh,buh.....

BAT!!!!!!!    I NEED Batman: Arkham City!!!!!!!!

  • All of you guys and gals seem to have played dragon age origins correct? So... I know i should have thought of this a looong time ago but should I spend some time renting/buying dragon age origins or just wait untill dragon age 2 comes out???

  • @Mike: Definitely play the first. I have a feeling hints back to the first game will be given in DA2. Hopefully they can do something similar to Mass Effect 2 and let your choices carry over. Yes, Mass Effect 1 and 2 had a lot of choices, but Dragon Age: Origins had game changing choices and quests the entire way through it. Everyone I've talked to about certain parts of the game had a different experience and different outcome with the same parts. Not sure how Bioware can keep all this straight in DA2, but I'm hopeful if that's the route they take. In short... DEFINITELY play DA: Origins! You are missing out if you don't!

  • Even though I liked the first Dragon Age, I still believe BioWare can improve in a bunch of places. So far it sounds like they're on the right path to making a great sequel like Mass Effect 2 or Assassin's Creed 2.

One topic that's a huge debate with most of my friends is the combat system used for the first Dragon Age. I didn't have that much of a problem with it, but I was expecting more of a "hack 'n slash" kind of system. Most of the people I talk to enjoyed the current combat system and don't want it changed, but I DO!!! Although it is probably too late to suggest anything...I'd like to see the combat evolve into something with more freedom (example: Kingdom Hearts 2, Devil May Cry Series, Ninja Gaiden 1&2...heck even the God of War series is a good example). We had a lot of options to dispose of our enemies, but it still didn't feel like I had complete control over my character...and that's what made the game kinda boring for me. It seemed like most of the time my teammates or myself would stand in one spot and just swipe at an enemy until it was eliminated. And a game like this is BEGGING for co-op gameplay too! That would mean they'd have to add a respawning mechanic for the enemies. I wouldn't mind that either. A lot of times I would backtrack and couldn't find anyone or anything to dice up!!!
  • Sounds more like a bloody hack and slash.

  • I'm assuming the agile rogue abilities are just like clicked abilities not hack and slash combos.(Actually didnt Bioware say these were just abilities? like "jump over and stab" instead of "vanilla backstab") I don't think they'll sacrifice story and content in the sake of cheap moves. At least I'd hope not. It's Bioware and they did well with DA1, I'll have faith.

Also, the rogue class could be OP in Dragon Age if done correctly, but in my experience(your mileage may vary) I never used any traps or grenade items, or rarely even poisons. Wonder how they plan on fixing all that.

(btw If you used alot of bombs in DA1 lemme know!)

  • You guys made it sound like there would be a video...oh well. Great update anyways!

  • It seems that this game is really working up to be a game worth waiting for.

  • Well, ***. I'm gonna have to buy the Ultimate Edition. I've been trying really hard to try and get away from the time-sink games. :)

  • I agree with what 90% of these comments say. I thought this was a video.......

I wanna see the Warrior in action. I loved the warrior class the most and never really played as a Rogue. Beat the game with a Mage, but that's about it other than my three run-throughs with a Warrior.

  • I am really behind on games. All of these sequels are coming out and i don't know anything about the first game.
  • sweet, i kind of thought there was video as well but this is still a good update

  • Looking sweet, I can't wait to get this PS3 style!

  • Where's the video?  Thanks for the information.  The rogue and female Hawke appear to good qualities of the game.

  • No video? That kinda bummed me out. Maybe ill actually play as a rogue for the first time in my life
