Dead Space 2 Multiplayer Like Left 4 Dead?

The original Dead Space was a tense single-player experience, but the team at Visceral Games is adding a multiplayer component for the sequel. EA has been keeping a lid on the specifics, but it looks like a few details have leaked: one of the multiplayer modes will feature players fighting each other as opposing teams of humans and monsters, similar to Left 4 Dead.

The rumor comes out of a recent GameStop conference, where EA allegedly dished out some info regarding Dead Space 2's online modes and pre-order incentives. Players will be divided into teams, one taking control of the hideously mutated necromorphs and the other assuming the role of standard human soldiers. Presumably, each side will have unique units, weapons, and abilities to create a level playing field.

While this is an exciting rumor when it comes to the game's replayability, I'm still more pumped up for the game's single-player campaign. For me, Dead Space is more about isolation and dread than teamwork...but I'm still intrigued to see what Visceral can do on the online front.

  • Could be fun, but have to agree on the isolation part.

If done right, could be a fun thing, but if not, could take away from the game.

  • WOW more and more incentive to pre-order this game every day.

  • Well thats nice. I never played the first (on the to do list) but this is a much bigger improvment. L4D is so *** awesome lol. Ever since i was a kid i wondered why no one made something like L4D

  • I hope it has co-op like Left 4 Dead I didn't like L4D's versus mode I thought it was boring.

  • Meh, will probably turn out to be one of those multiplayer modes that I play for an hour before going back to the single player.

  • Like L4D, as in you have to go back to the lobby without ever even finishing the first level because the other team rage quits after their turn as the necromorphs?

  • As long as I get to be a killer baby in Zero G!

  • meh, unless the game actually causes me to be scared ( the first game failed epically at this) i'm not interested

  • While the single-player campaign does focus a lot on personal isolation, don't forget that essentially you are also aiding and being aided by NPC's throughout the story. Think of it as someone instead of being a giant vag hiding behind a TV telling you where to go and what to do - you're standing side by side killing together.

  • That is fine.

  • wow that looks awesome

  • Considering Dead Space 2 is said to have more action oriented controls, no reason this couldn't work.

  • Ugh... I hate Left 4 Dead. I seriously hope the multiplayer is nothing like Left 4 Dead's multiplayer.

  • Well I always enjoyed that mode in Left 4 Dead, but it wasn't easy to scare people unless you were a hunter or played with a friend that jumps at anything (I've played with a few). So Dead Space 2 multiplayer could still be fairly creepy in its own right.

If games like Resident Evil 3 allowed control of the Nemesis vs. Jill (please Capcom?) by players, I think that could be pretty scary. Those weird necromorphs from the first Dead Space that were really tall and lean and made really deep noises scared me more than anything, I'd love to play as one.

EDIT: Just looked it up, the necromorph I was thinking of was the Divider, seen here: http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Divider.
  • I don't know how Left 4 Dead's multiplayer plays or is but I have seen videos of it and it looks intense. A single-player experience is enough for me from this game so as long as Dead Space 2 has a heart pounding single-player experience like the first Dead Space, multiplayer is a second resort for me.
  • That would be awesome if it was true. I've always wanted to slice and dice other players with the Plasma Cutter (aka, the best game in the series).

  • hope its balanced instead with repeating death until you damage your opponents enough to end the game

  • Sold

  • It's one of those things - do it right, and it will make the game even better, but if they do it wrong, it could ruin the game as a whole.  Tricky, tricky, tricky.

  • wow sounds like fun...hope they do it.
