Update: Sony Announces Qriocity Music Service

by Annette Gonzalez on Sep 01, 2010 at 12:55 PM

Update: At Berlin's IFA 2010 today, Sony announced its new digital music service, Music Unlimited Powered by Qriocity as rumored.

The cloud music service gives users access to millions of songs, similar to Rhapsody, that can be used across Sony devices -- in other words PlayStation 3, Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems, and VAIO PCs.

The music service will launch later this year. Sony says we can expect to hear more details soon.

Original story: Tomorrow Sony may be announcing a service similar to Apple's iTunes that will offer music and video on Sony consoles next year.

As reported by the Financial Times, the subscription-based service will be unveiled at tomorrow's IFA technology expo in Berlin, according to "sources in the  media industry." The PlayStation 3 and PSP will launch the new service, and Bravia TVs, Vaio computers, and Ericsson phones won't be far behind. The service won't be available until next year, according to sources. Maybe in time for the rumored PSP phone? Does this mean PlayStation Network is getting some sort of redesign? Will the two services operate independently? Hopefully we'll get some answers soon.

We'll keep you updated on news regarding this potential new Sony service as it becomes available.
