New Xbox 360 Controller Coming In November

Microsoft is offering a new controller – with a new swivel d-pad – in a play & charge kit bundle this November for $64.99.

Some features of the new controller:

  • Grey controller buttons
  • A d-pad that can be raised slightly by twisting the top of the d-pad
  • Different concave for the sticks
  • Out November 9 for $64.99
  • Only available with the Play & Charge kit (replaces existing one)

If you're at PAX in Seattle this weekend you can get your hands on it and see what you think.

  • Please let this be true!  I remember playing Fallout 3 a while back, and assigning your weapons to the different directional inputs turned out to be a nightmare thx to the crappy d-pad.  Fix it Microsoft, and you will make a lot of people happy.

  • I personally prefer the PS3 controller, but good for microsoft?

  • i didn't mind the controller layout...

  • Sounds refreshing. As long as there is a wired version then I'm sold.

  • Whats the big deal about the D-pad to everyone? Most games don't use it and maybe I've lucked out but I haven't had an issue with it yet.

EDIT: Oh yeah and no matter how many times I see a vid of him, Major nelson always creeps me out.
  • The current D-pad is really sub par, glad to see a change coming(Dunno if it will work or not though, we'll see right?.)

  • Hopefully they change the D-Pad, but you would think they would have done that a long time ago if it wasn't for the RROD issue.

Oh well, it will be interesting to see what the new controller looks like.

  • I cant deny im gunna need one of them if this rumer is true that stoopid D-pad makes it impossable for quick keys on oblivion and fallout witch are like the only two games i really ever use the D-pad for anyway

  • Major Nelson announced a new Xbox Controller for November...and yes...it fixes the D-Pad.

  • I'm still waiting for the Razer Onza to release.

This lifting and rotating sounds like it will only complicate the problem. Until Microsoft realizes that they just need to make the D-button into four individual buttons, the problem will persist. Period.

  • I don't get it, the d-pad lifts a quarter of an inch when you rotate it 90 degrees?  I can't picture what is supposed to be happening.

  • the controller is great except for that crapy d-pad,for the love of god, just give a d-pad that looks like this.

  • Woo! Finally, Directional Pad input becomes awesome for the 360... wait. Why does it need to "swivel?"

  • Hopefully this will be good, I guess we won't find out till November 9th.

  • Just rip-off the Sega Genesis d-pad design, and you're guaranteed success.

EDIT: Oh, they DID rip off the Genesis design. Bouns!
  • Yea I don't like that at all.  They should just keep the color and make the D-pad 4 standalone buttons.

  • the grey buttons look dumb

  • It's not going to work. Older games have colored button indicators on the screen and in the game. It may be a little confusing to some. Are new Xbox 360 games going to have the grey buttons displayed on the screen?

  • The grey face buttons look awful. I preferred the colored ones. I'm indifferent on the new D-pad, as I've never had problems with the old one. I do like the new sticks though. They look like they won't be so prone to the plastic or rubber (or whatever it is) wearing down from extended use, especially since they don't have those little nubs on them that always wear away. Also, I wonder if this will be available in black.
  • 64.99?! At least it comes with the play and charge kit. It's not like I already have one of those. Who cares about some pointless twist gimmick? Just rip off the PS3 D-Pad and I will pay for one.

Also, the grey buttons are ugly and those would also be improved if they were swapped with the PS3 style buttons. Much more comfortable. I will say Xbox always had the perfect analog sticks and triggers for their games so I'm not entirely hateful. Just mostly.
