Nintendo Drops DSi/XL Price Point September 12

Thinking of augmenting your handheld collection with a Nintendo DSi or DSi XL? We recommend holding off till September 12, as Nintendo just announced both portable gaming systems will receive a $20 price reduction next month.

Starting September 12, the new retail price for the DSi and DSi XL will be $149.99 and $169.99, respectively. Holding firm due to steady sales, the Nintendo DS Lite will remain at its $129.99 price point.

“We know shoppers want to get the maximum value out of every dollar they spend,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “Our new Nintendo DSi prices make it easier than ever for consumers to access the tremendous variety of games, applications, and social tools on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL systems.”

The price drop is most likely a strategy to move units before the release of the Nintendo 3DS sometime before March of next year (the exact release date is still a mystery.) To date, Nintendo has sold more than 42.3 million units in the Nintendo DS family in the U.S. alone. According to analysts, Nintendo expects to sell over five million 3DS handhelds by spring 2011.

Comments
  • Nintendo domination gets a bit bigger.

  • i know what i'm saving up for! i've put off buy the DSiXL for far too long.

  • I'm still waiting for Nintendo to announce the release date of the much-anticipated 3DS.  I was hoping for a Holiday release, but that is seeming more unlikely as the time flies by.

  • I'm actually waiting for the DS to drop more in price, hopefully around the holiday season.  I am still using my girlfriend's DS lite, but upgrading in the future will probably happen.

  • haven't bought another since the DS lite, don't plan to till the 3DS

  • Its the best thing because everyone seems to be in save mode for the 3ds.  No new systems so people get antsy, that and it seems psp2 rumors and going strong more and more...

hopefully both companies will surprise us with holiday releases.

  • If you haven't bought one now, I don't know why you would with the 3DS on the way.  The XL upgrade seemed sort of senseless to me, but who am I to question Nintendo's business model?

  • still waiting for the 3DS

  • Looks like I might just be gettin' meself a DS in September. Especially with Golden Sun: Dark Dawn coming out in November.

  • I can't wait for the 3ds.

  • Ehh, I don't know, this news is great but I already have a DSi and I might as well just wait till the 3DS.

Come on Nintendo give us a release date! This is killing me!

  • I've been wanting a DSi... BUT I'll wait for the 3DS. So little money, so little time.

  • Maybe it's time to start thinking about getting one.

  • Sucks I still have the first version of the DS.

  • Sweet,  I hope we see a 3DS release date soon.

  • wow good job dropping the price after i bought it

  • I have a feeling the price reduction may be making way for a surprise 3DS holiday release.  Sure that the theory is a bit out there, but you never know ;)

  • So looking forward to the 3DS when its released. Waiting for it and the psp 2.

  • waiting for the 3ds

  • Sweet deal, but I think everybody's saving their bucks for the 3DS next year.
