Acclaim Shuts Its Doors...Again

by Joe Juba on Aug 28, 2010 at 07:43 AM

Acclaim is a familiar name to old-school gamers, but its role in today's industry landscape has been small. Sadly, it's about to get even smaller, since Acclaim is closing down for the second time.

The publisher was behind some big games in the '90s, like Turok and console ports of NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat. The company closed down in 2004 amidst shady financial dealings and poor sales. The Acclaim name was purchased and revived in 2005, and though the new company was unrelated to Acclaim's previous incarnation, it has apparently carried on the tradition of failure.

The new Acclaim focused on online community games, but in a no-frills announcement on its website, the company revealed its demise. "We regret to inform you that all Acclaim games will no longer be in service effective August 26, 2010," the site says.

If you were one of Acclaim's customers, you can follow the links on the site to get reimbursed for unused Acclaim coins, or to receive a refund for purchases made in the last 30 days for the game 9Dragons.

Farewell, Acclaim. You may not have made the best games, but you were an important part of gaming history.
