Brad Pitt To Play John Marston In Red Dead Movie?

Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption was a smashing success, and we all know what success means for a video game: movie tie-ins! If the latest Hollywood rumor is to be believed, studios are scrambling to put together a big screen version of Red Dead starring none other than Brad Pitt (pictured above in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford).

Showbiz Spy brings us this rumor from an unnamed Hollywood insider. Apparently the idea for the film adaptation is "to make this in the style of an epic Western movie but with a few modern touches." Pitt is being targeted for the lead role and is "being given first refusal" -- i.e. no other actors will be considered unless he turns it down.

It seems like making a Red Dead Redemption movie could be a little strange, seeing as the game itself is already extremely cinematic and borrows heavily from scenes, characters, and plot threads from older Western films. Does anyone else feel like we're getting trapped in some horrifying time loop where games recycle ideas from movies that then recycle ideas from games?

  • A red dead redemption movie? Rated R.

  • Video game to movie adaption? Looks interesting.

  • This could work. I can totally see Brad Pitt playing Marston. Hope this goes through.

  • It's neutral news. Could swing either way. Remember Fight Club (yay!)... and remember Mr. and Mrs. Smith (shudders)
  • NOOO DONT DO IT!! NOOO

  • there's no more original movie ideas left...look at the HUGE influx of super-hero movies. not much thought involved when you have hundreds of comics, previous movies/tv shows worth of material to draw from. video games are no different.

damnit hollywood, think for yourself again!

  • fake and ...

  • SPOILER INCLUDED: I don't know..... maybe if they do a prequel where it leads up to where he was left for dead by the gang and settles down.... but I wouldn't see the movie if it was the same storyline as the game. Or if Brad Pitt plays Jack Marston filling in his fathers shoes and being recruited by the feds to be a bounty hunter and avenge his fathers death or something Even though he already killed the person who pulled the trigger on his dad.

  • Yes, Phil, I do.

  • I would watch it..if it's good.

  • Rated R could be good

  • I hate hollywood. Unoriginal ideas from people more concerned about $$$ signs than entertainment.

Wait, are we talking about movies or games here?

  • He would be awesome.

  • I could see Brad Pitt playing Jack Marston, a whiny little baby. John Marston needs an actor that can be a manly cowboy badass.

  • Here we go again.

  • I honestly saw this coming. I've never played the game, but I've seen most of the trailers and stuff. I'm more interested in a Bioshock movie, though. At least that isn't as big a cliche as a western movie.

  • I hope by, "modern touches," they don't mean stupid new music or extreme hotties and future weapons... like that other western that is supposed to be out soon. Hollywood 'spice' often ruins the flavor of what could be a potential feast for the eyes, ears and mind.

  • In a way I like the idea because I love RDR, but it could also turn out really dull and end up in the crap bin with almost all other movies based on a video game.

  • But the real question is where is the GTA movie?

  • Brad Pitt is as much as a cowboy as Nicolas Cage is a wizard. If you're going to have an actor play a cowboy, do it right and pick Josh Brolin (the guy who played Jonah Hex).
