Kinect Not Just For Xbox?

Microsoft is hoping that Kinect will be a big success for the Xbox 360, but creative director Kudo Tsunoda sees that as only the beginning for the motion-tracking camera.

Tsunoda recently told CVG that Kinect's technology could have larger applications than just the Xbox 360. "We take stuff from movies, or take technology from PCs and put it into games, and Kinect really is the first time that the video game industry is pioneering something that I really think has widespread application outside of just video games."

Tsunoda stated that PC compatibility is a "possibility" for Kinect's future, and that it may even be used with mobile phones one day. For now, however, Tsunoda was quick to point out that Microsoft's focus for Kinect is solely on the Xbox 360. Is this simple PR hype or a sign of things to come? We'll have to wait to find out.

  • This is kinda off topic but has anyone besides me not gotten there GI issue yet?

  • Well, it has to do well first.

  • It's bad enough they're bringing that crappy technology to the Xbox, leave it there.

  • That movie, about the kids at fat camp... they had that giant tube thing in the water... this is going to be a flop nearly as epic as the fat fatties that got launched off that sucker.

  • This is what I've been saying was the strongest possibility for success with the technology. Maybe Microsoft should give me a job for my clairvoyance.

  • There was some "leaked" Windows 8 docs that had Kinect support for the new OS. I would not rule out future Kinect support on PCs.

  • I want them to explain how in gods name that could work on a mobile phone in any way.

  • Don't let microsoft know this! They might try a second attempt to take over the world!

  • It seems Microsoft could have a Plan "B" for Kinect, seeing as there are people who want to take the tech beyond gaming.

I feel that motion-tracking cameras would be very appealing to anyone who likes making videos for Youtube or for a video production class at a school.

  • Yeah, Kinect always seemed like one of those things that might have other non-gaming uses.

  • All I'm concerned about right now is how it is going to take with gamers.  If anything, if Kinect doesn't do the gamers justice, then maybe we will see this new technology be more compatible with....ummm....mobile phones...?

  • Yeah, I could see this coming a mile away.

  • "Microsoft is HOPING that Kinect will be a big success for the Xbox 360"

Ouch, not a good start. I'm sure after seeing how "well" Kinect will do they'll want to bury it 6 feet deep.

  • If Kinect flops, which it most likely will, we'll probably just see 360 Move. Microsoft's attempt to imitate the Wii like Sony. I think I will stick with my Dualshock 3. I'm also glad to see Classic Controller support for GoldenEye 007.

  • -insert random bashing of kinect saying it is a failure, before it's even out yet-

You guys seem to all think that because most people on GI aren't interested means that no one is interested in Kinect. Well bad news for your ego's cause I know quite a few people who are getting Kinect Day one. How about you wait and actually see what happens before you judge the success of a product not even marketed towards you?
  • Microsoft is putting way too much time into kinect.

  • Microsoft already making a plan B for Kinect! What is the point on buying kinect if the Playstation Eyetoy does what kinect does, better and for hardcore gamers and PS Move does what Wii does better too?

  • I personally think that Kinect is perfect for schools and offices where they can use the technology to help people learn a new language with the voice feature, help presentations on powerpoint with the motion control and all kinds of huge innovative ideas such as learning how to play an instrument or karate through its scanning items and personal recognition in both you and your body movements. Sign language i heard is something Kinect can also do or at least will be able to do.... to all those who are hating I think you are underestimating the technology and its capabilities.

In terms of gaming I believe that the hardcore audience has been screwed over but when the day comes when Resporn entertainment bring out their COD killer with an EA (kinect exclusive) M4A1 wireless assult rifle that can be scanned by kinect and used in game then every hardcore gamer will eat their words!

  • How would it work with a phone?

  • Cool,want that one too.
