New PSP Being Showcased To Publishers?

We expected to hear about Sony's new PSP at E3, but that didn't happen. Rumors are flying at Gamescom, however, about the upcoming handheld.

Eurogamer.net has info from some sources that the unit – which allegedly doubles as a smart phone – is being shown to Sony's publishing partners. It looks more like the PSP-3000 than the new slider form of the PSP Go, with the touch controls at the back of the unit in a separate area. Whether this is the only way to control the handheld, and if it will have a standard d-pad and analog stick, is unknown. The unit also features Flash storage and – like previous PSPs – a great-looking screen.

Sony hasn't announced anything regarding this new system, and sources differ about its release date. Some say the end of this year, others say no release date is in sight. It would seem that the latter is likely, since to our knowledge publishers don't even have development kits yet, and are only being shown the unit at this time.

  • I would buy that

  • looks sick

  • if it's a PSP successor, please let it have dual analog pads!

  • Photoshopping for the win.

  • I would really like to know more about this.  I have the God of War psp 2000 and want to upgrade to a 3000, but not if this is on the horizon.

Of course if it is a phone also that changes things as I am in a committed relationship with my Droid 2, I expect it to last about two years.

  • Nice mockup. Would be nice if the PSP would look like that. Don't really like the PSP GO. Too little.

  • cool.

  • looks like it could be used as a phone also if its true then i will by it

  • Doubling as a smart phone sounds like an excellent idea.  I think it'd be best if they didn't have standard controls (d-pad, analog nub, buttons, etc.) and just went for more an iPhone type device.  Appealing to casuals is what Sony needs to do if they want to be successful in the mobile gaming market.

  • Do want... need a new phone and have been mulling over the idea of a PSP for ages

  • Hopefully it is not a digital download only platform that is the only thing that would make it a no go for me.

  • yay another freaking portable system thats to small for my giant hands... i traded in the psp 2000 cause it hurt to play it...

  • The ONLY way I would buy this is if...

    A) It is graphically superior to the PSP. I am not asking for a major leap here, just one that can allow for crisper textures and higher frame rates.

    B) It is completely linked with PSN. I want my PSN account linked to the phone.

    C) Trophies. Being able to earn Trophies on the phone which is linked to your PSN account would be fantastic.

    D) PS1 and, if possible, PS2 games. Give us a whole collection of our favorite games from the previous generations.

Microsoft just revealed their phone which will be linked to our Xbox Live accounts. We can earn achievements and play Xbox Live Arcade games. Sony really needs to beat that if they want my money.

  • @Gabriel360

"Appealing to the casuals" is what Sony's done since the psp's conception, and this approach is one of the main reasons why it continues to lag behind the DS.  The umd movies never caught on, and the mp3 couldn't compete with the Ipod.  Now they're trying to compete with the Iphone, as well as the other smart-phones on the market.  Bad idea.

For the life of me, i'll never understand why they continue to toss the psp's software to the wayside in favor of this kitchen sink approach to the system's media features.

  • Gotta see it first. I got a feeling this will be my first PSP purchase

  • only if its for verizon... thennnnn I will consider getting it

  • As long as whatever games they come up with for this new PSP, works with the 3000 model, I don't have to get this. And I really don't want to as I don't see much use of it for myself. I only use the PSP for gaming and my cell to make calls and occasional texting. I don't need all that extra crap.

  • If it comes out, I will buy it -- fo'sho.

  • Doubles as a smart phone....? I can see it now....

"Stop calling me mother ***, I'm trying to step my game up like the PSP commercials told me to."

  • Sony dropped the psp from the start. UMD's, launch software titles, lackluster media support, etc.

P.S. im gonna go get an iphone 4 which completely surpasses the current psp's AND the next model.
