New To Gran Turismo 5: Course Creator, Kart Racing

by Phil Kollar on Aug 18, 2010 at 03:04 AM

When I posted our list of 25 most anticipated games of the rest of the year last week, Gran Turismo 5 was the most-mentioned missing game on the list by far. Maybe the long wait had just made us forget how huge and exciting a new Gran Turismo game is, but Sony's latest Gamescom reveals for the upcoming racer have us getting hyped up again.

One huge surprise, especially so close to release, is that GT5 will come with an extensive course creator. This isn't quite a complete track editor, but it allows players to build races by tweaking options such as the setting, frequency of curves, sharpness of corners, and more. Apparently it will be a very quick and painless process, so even players who aren't normally into user-generated content will be able to use these tools.

The game will also feature kart racing. Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi said that this was originally planned for Gran Turismo 6 -- a release I expect we won't see until sometime after 2018 -- but the feature was leaked, so they decided to put it into GT5. Fair enough! I found the following YouTube video of go-karting in the game, and it looks like a fun way to mix things up.
