id Says New Engine Not For Sale

by Matthew Kato on Aug 13, 2010 at 04:54 AM

id Software has made a name for itself not only with its games, but by the licensing of its engines as well. Now, however, id president Todd Hollenshead says that id engines will only be used in id/Bethesda titles.

"It's like, look, this is a competitive advantage," he told Eurogamer, "and we want to keep it within games we publish – not necessarily exclusively to id or id titles, but if you're going to make a game with id Tech 5, then it needs to be published by Bethesda, which I think is a fair thing."

As such, id's Rage (shown) will be the only announced game using the engine. When id was bought by Bethesda's parent company ZeniMax last year, we all assumed that id's engine licensing prowess (and therefore the leveraging of tech god John Carmack) was a big reason for the deal. Hollenshead says, however, that when the company was bought, the decision was made to keep the tech for Bethesda-published titles only.
