Sony To Combine Android Phone And PSP Go?

Sony’s PSP Go was a bit of a dud, so the next version of Sony’s mobile gaming device is going to have to make some waves. If early rumors are to be believed, the next PSP could cause a tsunami.

Not one to be easily fooled, tech site Engadget seems fairly convinced that Sony – in its partnership with Ericsson – is working on a PSP/smart phone hybrid that runs on Google’s Android 3.0 operating system. Engadget even worked up a slick mock up image (below).

If this is true then the next PSP might have a similar design to the PSP Go, but it would also feature a touch screen and be able to handle all the heavy lifting of a modern smart phone. Sources even say that game franchises like God of War, Modern Warfare, and Little Big Planet are in the works for the device, and that this new hardware could be out as early as October.

If any of this is true, we just need to know how much the monthly contract would cost…and where we need to sign.

  • c'mon sony, let's have something more original

  • Still don't care about the PSP.
  • Getting real tired of companies thinking I am willing to pay for monthly payments in order to use stuff that I already own.  If I am going to be charged each month to use what I own, then I want the option to trade in my old stuff each month for new gadgets as well.

  • i had high hopes for the PSPGo until there was no transfer plan (cause i am still a staunch buyer of hard copies!).  I really have never really cared for my phone being able to play games as i havent updated my phone in 5 years.  So i really cant give props to this device.  It might have everything necessary to be amazing...but unless there is a transfer program in place...color me uninterested.

  • anybody else thinking N-GAGE pt.2?

  • so after losing the handheld war to the iPhone (thats right...the iPhone), Sony decides to copy yet again.

Can we safely say that this pretty much takes Sony out of competition with Nintendo for handheld dominance? I mean, Nintendo is focusing primarily on games with the 3DS, while Sony seems to be focusing on everything else. This thing is basically an iPhone wth a PSP logo.

I will admit though. A smart phone that plays PSP quality games like God of War? I would buy that........just not before a 3DS

  • WHAT?! i haev often dreamed of having a mix of phone and handheld gaming console, though i thought the ds/iphone seemed cool. this. would. be. awesome! however, my heart belongs to the 3ds.

  • Neeeeaaahh, it really won't get me to buy one unless you can play hard copy games. -3-

  • COME ON!!! I JUST GOT A FRIGIN PSP!! WHY DIDNT I LEARN ABOUT THIS 5 MONTHS AGO!!!!

  • This is very attractive

  • ...Giggedy....

  • Looks kind of cool i guess. I might upgrade, considering that my psp broke.

  • Oh Sony, this is why I won't buy any of your crap anymore. You just keep disappointing me.

  • This is pretty big.  Not that I care since I'm beyond a phone/hardcore gaming all in one, but it's still cool nonetheless.

  • It LOOKS good but I don't think it will happen. And what would be the price??? I think Sony a companies whose console just turned a profit for them really needs to sit down and think deeply about what direction they really want to go in. They have made some major missteps with PS3 and I don't think simply copying someone else product is going to lead them to the place the want to be. They need a unique idea that reflects their ability to deliver a quality piece of technology. Which is what sony is known for NOT software.
  • I  dont know about the rest of you, but i think this product is pretty sick, i would tottaly buy this phone, no only because it runs on android 3.0, but it includes a handheld psp , to me this seems very reasonable, and a good idea, but only for the right price

  • Actually might get this if its true.

  • I've been planning on getting a new PSP for a while, my old one broke, so if this is true, and if it is backwards compatible with PSP games, then I know what I'm asking for, for Christmas. =)
  • Why the hell would I buy this, honestly? I want to buy a wellmade PSP,that's all. As for buying a contract just to play PS games, no freaking way.
