Less Is More With This Abstract Street Fighter Art

Like our ability to comprehend words where only the first and last letter are correctly in place (It is sgnifciatnly esiear than one wulod tinhk), it's surprising how easily our brains can identify these iconic Street Fighter characters in their ultimate abstract form.

Artist and blogger InfiniteContinues recently debuted the above image, inspired by Bauhaus and De Stijl era designs and the simple presentation of early Atari and Intellivision games.

Infinite Continues previously garnered attention for his similar studies in video-game minimalism – using only the most primitive shapes and colors of industry-staple characters to prove just how recognizable they are. Check out his Flickr stream to see the entire set.

How long did it take you to identify the characters above?

[Thanks to Tony Goff for the tip!]

  • i love those first and last letter things it amazing

  • Well, this is just awesome!

  • Awesome! Our brains are totally cool!

  • love it, although correct me if I'm wrong. In assuming the last figure is Dhalsim his looking a little pale???

  • Very cool. I recognize all of them! :)

  • This is cool!

  • That is pretty awesome.

To answer your question Meagan, it only took me a few seconds, it is pretty surprising, as you said, how the human brain recognizes stuff like this so easily.

  • Less than one second. Uncanny.

  • Ha, this is freakin' amazing :)

It kinda reminds me of those "pick your paint color" things at home depot and other places :)

  • Took me a bit to figure out who the second guy was supposed to be.

The two red lines were throwing me off.

  • Too funny. I wonder if this artist has an electronics background...

  • ... I feel like I'm being left out... because I don't like fighting games and don't play Street Fighter. :(

Thanks for making me feel bad GI.

Btw, is the left most one Ryu? Cause he's about the only Street Fighter character I know.

  • At first I was like "Wha?" then, "Oh, I see what you did there." About 5 seconds overall...

Where can one find prints of some of the art pieces GI continues to advocate?

  • Man, I recognized all but E. Honda. I totally forgot about that guy, jeez. I feel less of a man for not knowing my street fighter, luckily im only 1/8th less of a man.

  • Wow, I love this. Thanks for sharing!

  • That's pretty cool

  • Ncie!

  • Wow this is pretty cool. i would buy this.

  • It is ridiculously easy to identify all of the characters.  It's just too bad that humans are still too stupid to actually harness the power that the mind offers.
