Guild Wars 2 Manifesto Video: For MMO Fans And Haters Alike

I've been interested in Guild Wars 2 for some time now, particularly once I found out about how they're dumping some of the MMO genre's most restricting conventions. No healers and no death penalties? Alright, I'm listening. Today developer ArenaNet released a video showcasing the game and what they're calling their "MMO Manifesto." Needless to say, I continue to be impressed and interested.

The most eyebrow-raising line in the video comes early on from ArenaNet founder Mike O'Brien: "If you love MMOs, you'll want to check it out Guild Wars 2, and if you hate MMOs, you'll really want to check out Guild Wars 2." Check out the video for yourself below and see if you agree with him.

  • So either way I should check out Guild Wars 2 can't I just get The Old Republic instead? In all seriousness the game looks like fable visually which I really like I'll have to keep my eye on it.

  • So if you hate MMOs, you should play Guild Wars 2, an MMO? O...k...

  • Guild Wars 2 is looking like it's going to become a great MMO without following the traditional rules of older MMOs and with no ridiculous subscription fee, I'm going to get it on day one.

  • I loved Guild Wars, this one seems like it's going to be 10x better.  I absolutely can't wait to play as an asuran and control golems.  Btw Asuran's are the little weird looking guys.

  • Looks EPIC!  This will be one on my radar.

  • Ok, maybe someone who knows about this stuff can answer a few questions for me. Did he say that there aren't any monthly fees?? If so, how do they keep revenue up? Please don't tell me they're going to pull one of those "You CAN keep playing to level up and unlock this awesome weapon, or you could just pay us now and get it stat"...

Also, is it like Wow (which I have never played, or any MMO for that matter) where you press a button but don't really have real time control of your character and the action?? It looks good, but not if it plays anything like WoW. I hate the way that game plays, just from watching friends play it.

  • I loved the original Guild Wars, and to this day it remiains the only MMO I have ever enjoyed playing.

With the advent of Guild Wars 2, that will soon change.

    I can't wait for this genre-defying MMO.

  • I really like the ideas that they are pushing for. Many MMOS suffer from gear envy, grind , and just cookie cutter conventions. I really believe the we need a new way to look at MMOS and stop doing things because every MMO does that its expected. GW2 sounds like its shooting for something impressive, i am eager to see if it can deliver.

  • OMG! this is unbeleivable,I absolutely LOVE GW and this is going to be pre-ordered by me ASAP!!!!!!!!! For those of you who dont know what Guild Wars is, i strongly suggest you check it out and try the free demo at Guildwars.com

  • I absolutely love Guild Wars. It is so different already from other MMOs. If they manage to implement all these different things that should make this game stand out from the rest even more. Then I really hope they'll do well.

Whether people who generally don't play MMOs could get in to it or not? As long as they keep the Heroes and Henchmen, I believe so.

  • The game looks fantastic, but I'm very skeptical if the developers can deliver on those promises.  If it is a MMO, how can your actions truly have weight for more than a few hours or not be undermined by other players?

I'm not a MMO fan, but, if I had to play one, it would be the new Star Wars MMO.

  • So......phasing?

  • That looked fantastic. They really have gone to town on making the game look beautiful. I'm really interested in how they are handling the combat.  It almost looked like a true RPG style attack system. Looking forward to more from this for sure.

  • Haha for lovers and haters...

I'm curious about how no healing will work. And how about all those people who... enjoy healing? The death penalty is no big deal to lose but healing seems essential. We'll see

  • I do hate MMO's, and I am very interested in Guild Wars 2. Unfortunately, I KNOW that my laptop can't run this thing:( Maybe I'll have a new comp by the time this comes out - I am super looking forward to trying this out.

No grinding? Hell yes, Arenanet! "Role Playing" does not equate to grinding, fetch quests, moronic dancing and other stupid emoticons, loot whoring, and right clicking to auto-follow someone else's character to a raid. People have needed to completely re-think this genre a looooong time ago. I'm glad you dudes are giving it a shot.

  • I have been following GW2 ever since it was announced and this video blew my mind in terms of gameplay. I love the original, actually just logged off of it because they are doing a server change. This looks revolutionary in terms of MMOs and im glad that A-Net is going off the beaten path to appeal to multiple kinds of gamers
  • free subscription ftw

  • The combat really looks fantastic in this game. As long its not fully instanced, im picking this up.

  • No monthly fees? Count me in.

  • Wow, I honestly didn't think it could happen, but they got me excited for another fantasy MMO. 2011 seems to be the year MMOs see a big change (finally).
