The lights are on
I love video games, but one core element that's difficult to find in the medium is terror. I'm talking real, flat-out, pure fright. Plenty of games give you the shocks and jolts of gruesome enemies jumping out of nowhere and goring your main character, but not enough totally mess with you and make you feel sick to your stomach with dread. Tonight, I stumbled onto the legend of just such a game.
The folks over at Tiny Cartridge posted the unsettling story of a collector of hacked Pokémon carts who randomly discovered a cartridge that contained more than he'd bargained for. Titled "Pokémon Black Version," what began as a straight rip of Pokémon Red took a turn for the weird with the offer of a new "Ghost" Pokémon. This powerful creature came with a "Curse" ability that not only instantly kills other Pokémon, but their trainers as well.
I won't ruin the (seriously messed up) ending, but let's just say using the Ghost Pokémon has a price. Check out the full write-up on Tiny Cartridge. It's well worth a read, even if the supposed hack may not exist.
Oh and whether or not the original version exists, a team of ROM hackers has banded together to make it a reality. Even knowing about the twists, I think I'm going to need to go out of my way to play this hack if it's ever finished.
Probably fake, but interesting story.
Wow. That was one creepy story. I listened to the music as I read the last few paragraphs. How is it games can't do this these days without a hacker?
That ghost looks faaaabulooous! But yea, as someone who never played anything Pokemon except Snap... this story just made me lulz.
I just read the story and... now I'm contemplating my own mortality. Also, this may have ruined Pokemon for me.
thats. so. friggen. COOL! wow, thats so creepy and dramatic. the price the trainer had to pay to use the ultimate attack... he won the battles, but at what cost?... The Cartridge must be found and cast into a volcano!
Wow...this is great writing. I've never heard of anyone creating such terror and mystery over a pokemon game.
To be honest, I feel that there is a big chance this hack was true. Not only to I feel it is too elaborate for a human being to come up with, but I remember coming across hacked Pokemon games. My favorite one was catching a skeleton Kabutops...that was really scary.
But I would buy the hacked version if it were made.
Sounds a little creepy.
weren't those ghost in yellow version. I'm pretty sure they were cause they would always kill my pokemon in the graveyard tower place. But they didn't kill the player.
That is what I love about Pokemon and its all its mysterious things.
That's just awesome - it's even worse than trying to capture MissingNo.
Honestly one of the most disturbing things I have seen in a while.
I think its fake, but its kind of cool.
That is some crazy ****. Man I would be scared to crap if I played this as a kid. Either way this is awesome and would definitely love to play it if they are even still around.
Ive always been creeped out by that music....ehhh freaky
Eh, sounds pretty fake, since he conveniently lost the cartridge and all. Kinda a fun story, but nothing more than that.
