The lights are on
I love video games, but one core element that's difficult to find in the medium is terror. I'm talking real, flat-out, pure fright. Plenty of games give you the shocks and jolts of gruesome enemies jumping out of nowhere and goring your main character, but not enough totally mess with you and make you feel sick to your stomach with dread. Tonight, I stumbled onto the legend of just such a game.
The folks over at Tiny Cartridge posted the unsettling story of a collector of hacked Pokémon carts who randomly discovered a cartridge that contained more than he'd bargained for. Titled "Pokémon Black Version," what began as a straight rip of Pokémon Red took a turn for the weird with the offer of a new "Ghost" Pokémon. This powerful creature came with a "Curse" ability that not only instantly kills other Pokémon, but their trainers as well.
I won't ruin the (seriously messed up) ending, but let's just say using the Ghost Pokémon has a price. Check out the full write-up on Tiny Cartridge. It's well worth a read, even if the supposed hack may not exist.
Oh and whether or not the original version exists, a team of ROM hackers has banded together to make it a reality. Even knowing about the twists, I think I'm going to need to go out of my way to play this hack if it's ever finished.
Resident Pokemon anyone? lol
Ask not for whom the bell tolls, trainer.
It tolls for thee.
man, that's seriously messed up. i don't know if i can play diamond anymore.
god i need to play pokemon again
That was a very disturbing and sad Pokemon hack. Pokemon isn't suppose to be that serious. lol.
The game actually sounds very well written and cinematic. Maybe I'll play a ROM of it.
A cool story indeed, a bit creepy too.
That story is awesome and it is probably the coolest idea for a pokemon game I've ever seen. And I don't even like pokemon.
That's kind of creepy.
they should make a game where you can hunt down pokemon with chainsaws
Very creepy indeed.
I doubt it's real, and I wouldn't spend much money on it if it were... the strategy for battles is so cut and dry with the Ghost. Lavender town scared me back in the day, and those Channelers pissed me off. It'd be cool to see a video of the weird cinematics though. Ghost has nothing on Missingno. Now to find my Pokemon Red and play through again.
I read the story they had, wow. This thing is just really creepy, it's such a dark thing for such a usually cheery game, it's so creepy yet so cool at the same time. Man, I hope this thing is real.
There are a number of technical reasons why I don't believe the story. Those aside, the scenario is very interesting and well planned. I've never dabbled in hacked roms of any game before, but I would love to see this idea become reality. On the other hand, the surprise might be spoiled now, and the rest of the game plays out pretty much like any other Pokemon.
Its a cool subject. I didnt find it creepy or terrifying, but cool.
thats not really scary its more weird and cool....ive always lked pokemon so ill try to play it if its real
This story is so compelling and like many said just down right creepy. After reading the article, I was left in a sense of shock and amazement. Whoever had made this bootleg copy either had a great sense of humor or is completely insane. If I were to run across something like this I would treasure it forever. Great article and story, thanks GI staff.
