Nintendo Joins The Fray – Sees Quarterly Profit Loss

Nintendo – usually in a favorable position as the butt of jokes involving printing money – has managed to avoid the problems plaguing fellow console and software developers since the release of the Nintendo Wii. That’s why the report of a $288.3 million loss for the three-month quarter ending June 30, 2010, is so surprising. The same period last year, Nintendo reported a profit of $484.8 million. Nintendo’s net revenue caps at $2.16 billion, over a 25 percent drop from 2009.

As reported by GameSpot, Nintendo addressed the decreased revenue as a result of declining Nintendo DS sales, as well as stagnant DS and Wii software numbers. Perhaps every potential consumer already owns one (or more) of the DS iterations? Nintendo maintains that Wii hardware sales are still in the green, currently at 73 million units sold worldwide.

Yen strengthening as a currency is also accredited as a factor for the loss, as it’s stabilization conversely decreases the value of overseas currency, and the bulk of Nintendo’s sales come from abroad. Nintendo approximates that over $808 million has fallen victim to foreign exchange losses, which consumed the bulk of their profits and resulted in the quarterly loss.

Nintendo just announced that the 3DS will hit retail in Japan in the coming months, something that will undoubtedly reignite hardware and software sales for the company.

  • Well sure, probably everyone who wanted a Wii or DS has already bought one.

  • I think if the Wii had more games like Madworld come out on it more hardcore gamers would be interested in the wii and it would sell more

  • I think the reason is because of the horrible quality of wii games people are tired of getting a console filled with shovelware but the 3DS will make up for these numbers.

  • *Nelson laugh*

  • WOOHOO....a new type of nintendo DS!

  • well now that everyone has a wii and ds, maybe nintendo should focus on making some games for once.

  • just wait for the 3DS. they are going to sell like dang hotcakes. i know i'll be one of the first in line to get one.

  • Focus on new systems and upgrades and online for nintendo= :(

Focus on new games for wii and Ds= :)

Nintendo 3ds looks good though, i would buy it if didnt already have a lot on my gaming list

  • Ha yen is strengthening so Nintendo is sucking. Man this world is retarded.

  • can't sell like hotcakes forever. demand will go down eventually. im sure the 3DS will pick those numbers right up. i just hope they dont rush the 3DS in the hopes of picking up sales numbers.

  • Yeah, as soon as the 3DS comes out they'll be right back on top. At least the 3DS is a respectable piece of hardware, unlike the Wii

  • I blame piracy. Seriously a bunch of jerks with that R4 garbage don't have to buy anything. That's why there are very few games that do sell well on the DS anymore. That thing should be illegal and if it is illegal it should be much harder for people to get because it is so out of hand.

  • Yeah but by the end of this year and the beginning of next year they are going to report a financial gain of 200% or more considering the 3DS and a slew of Nintendo Wii games about to hit the market.

I have no worries that Nintendo will fail the rest of this year.

  • quarterly profit loss is right.  Not at a loss though like some sites are reporting.

  • Maybe if Nintendo wasn't so good at making durable systems they wouldn't have this problem. But really, I'm finally having to buy a new DS Lite because the one I've had for almost five years is finally starting to break at the hinges.

The 3DS is going to pick them right back up again, there's really no question. And I feel like there are some pretty good games coming out for both the Wii and DS that look good. Which means I'll definitely be buying them.

I don't think Nintendo has too much to worry about. They'll be fine.

  • I'm not worried in the least for the Big N.  With the 3DS on the horizon and plenty of first-party titles coming out that Nintendo fanboys (myself included) are going to eat up, Nintendo is going to have a LOT of success with both hardware AND software sales.

  • Once the 3DS hits, it'll land big and reverse any doubts people may be forming. Everyone dips at some point and these are the dog days of summer for gaming.

  • Just wait until the fall when Kirby, donkey kong, and mickey come out to play

  • Sucks for Nintendo wish them the best, though good games have been coming out this year, and know that other good games coming this year along with the 3DS, this may help Nintendo out alot.
  • Recession sucks huh?
