Guillermo del Toro Set To Announce Video Game Projects

The ex-Hobbit director says that he's got a pending announcement about a video game he's been working on, and it involves a big player in the industry.

"One of the things we're announcing in the next few weeks is a big deal with a big company," he told MTV News. "We're going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting. It's not a development deal. We're going to do it. We're doing them. And we're going to announce it soon enough."

We're all excited to see what the Hellboy director has in store, but what could it be? Currently he's got a number of movie irons in the fire, including films for Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Slaughterhouse-Five, and Drood. We'll have to wait and see if his big announcement is related to any of these projects or something else entirely.

  • Great. Because it's not like movie directors are known for publicly committing to a project, then dropping out at the last minute. Especially if it has anything to do with videogames.

*glares at Peter Jackson and/or Steven Spielberg*
  • Awesome, can't wait.

  • del toro is a brilliant artist. everything he's touched, i've loved. his books are incredible and his movies (pan's labyrinth in particular) are awe-inspiring. I don't care if this never ends up happening... even knowing that there is a POSSIBILITY that a del toro-infused game could hit the shelf is good enough news for me. thank you, GI, for making my day :)

  • That's awesome. It's great to see a guy who makes movies is going to be working on a video game, cause we all know that when people jump across media it just leads to great things. Just look at what comic book writer Frank Miller did when he made "The Spirit." That was just great! -_-

  • Sounds like it could be intresting, but I don't want to see a Hellboy video game....unless there already is one??

  • Let's hope it's not a video game based on a movie, we all know how that turns up. And all those games fail epic.

  • Well, as long as its better than Hellboy II. That movie was BAD

  • Well, del Toro can't do wrong (just look at his masterpiece, Pan's Labyrinth), so anything from him I'm automatically excited for.

  • i have faith in del toro. he has a way about him that most other big-time directors don't, and it makes me think he might actually follow through w/ the creation of a videogame

  • Well hopefully it is something else entirely, would love to see if it is a new IP that he develops.

  • SUPER DOPE! I Hope it's as great as his movies.
  • I am sure it will be something wonderful. Del Toro is a great artist and a visionary.

Too bad Sundown never panned out.

  • Hoping this is something big and not a huge flop.

  • This more or less negates anyone saying games can't be art. Del Toro's opinion wins.

  • YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!

  • Should be cool. Hope it's a new IP, and I hope it has some of the impossibly cool monsters I've come to associate with Del Toro films.

  • If the creatures in his game look anything like the practical effects he puts into his movie, I'm game. I LOVED "Pan's Labyrinth." Especially the aesthetic look to the movie. Can't wait to hear more.

  • Mod

Oh my God YES! The man is a brilliant storyteller and I can't wait to see what he's doing. Personally, I'm hoping for a horror title. He can definitely create a great story in a survival horror game that's actually terrifying to play. Do it del Torro!

  • the last time a good director joined with a "big company" a really good game came out. Boom Blox with Steven Spielberg was really fun. Even though it wasn't anything like Spielberg has ever made before.
