Disney Makes Macrotransaction, Buys Playdom

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jul 27, 2010 at 01:52 PM

Forget StarCraft II: Today, Disney announced it has agreed to purchase the online social gaming site Playdom, bringing us one step closer to our longtime dream of playing a Kingdom Hearts/Fanglies crossover.

If you're wondering how much a company that makes Facebook games sells for, Disney bought Playdom for $563.2 million. In addition to the aforementioned – and seriously bizarre – Fanglies, Playdom has created other online games such as Lil FarmLife, Social City, and Mobsters. While our dream mash-up will probably remain a pipe dream, a more likely result of the acquisition would be free-to-play online games featuring characters from Disney's long list of IP. If that's not enough to get you interested, Disney CEO Robert Iger also mentioned Marvel – which the company bought in 2009 – as a potential avenue for future games. Maybe an X-Men/Fanglies crossover instead? We can only hope...
