The lights are on
Despite moving 2.6 million units since its release, UFC Undisputed 2010 hasn't performed as well as THQ was hoping. The company's UK marketing director Jon Rooke said "Our sales were softer than where we would have liked them to be. We know our UFC and MMA fans have bought it, but we haven't delivered the broader sales yet."
Speculating as to why the game underperformed, the company pointed towards the juggernaut that was Red Dead Redemption. Rooke said "Rockstar have probably taken a fair amount of our market share. They shipped 5m units, taking a lot of consumer dollars."
While they're two entirely different games, there's no denying that Red Dead was a sales phenomenon during that time period. It's entirely possible that its runaway success could have taken a chunk out of UFC's numbers.

Everyone blames Red Dead. I guess it really IS the new Grand Theft Auto
Right, because western games and fighting games are definitely the same audience.
All that stuff I didn't do around the house...Red Dead's fault.
i blame Redemption of Alan Wake's poor sales, too. that, and a lack of ads and coverage on the game. i ask my friends if they played Alan Wake and they have no idea what i'm talking about!
Ah, Red Dead Redemption aka "The Scapegoat of May 2010."
They forgot about a little plumber named Mario too, who came out with a new game a mere 2 days before UFC.
Did they ever stop to think the MMA game may just be a fad? I didn't really like UFC 2010 compared to UFC 2009.
Bottom line, if they were that afraid of RDR, they should have pulled a Holiday 2009, & cleared an entire path for that game, in a similar fashion to Modern Warfare 2. (That goes for everyone who launched something in May & is now boohooing about poor sales.)
Cry me a river THQ, cry me a river....
Oh, and Red Dead FTW!
I didn't buy UFC because I didn't want to, not because RDR was better. I'd say a fair share of people purchasing RDR had the same mindset.
The main thing is people want more bang for their buck these days. RDR delivers 30+ hrs of great gameplay and multiplayer awesomeness. Games like UFC & Alan Wake seemingly offer less (and probably less-exciting) gameplay. Alan Wake is a rental for many...
Maybe the pass to play online had an affect on this? Just an idea of having something like that floating around, discouraged some from buying it.. maybe?
Woot for Red Dead!
Living in bro-central southern California, all I see and hear every time I step outside of my house is MMA crap... so tired of it... glad to hear of a minor slump in their still way too high sales.
Yes Red Dead is a Juggernaunt of a game still 2.5 isn't that bad of a sales number oh well mabey next year we will see less games released following the holidays a more evenly spread out through the year because with so many great games it is hard to play the majority of them heck I still haven't touchd Just Cause 2, Deadly Premonition.SSF4,
and a bunch of others I got but still haven't had the time to play oh well.
My thought is this game failed because the people who are interested in Ultimate fighting usually have a sibling to take out to the back yard and pound on.
Maybe the people buying this game are only childs?
What is this, The 5th Developer now that has blamed Red Dead Redemption for lack of sales of their own titles? Who's next Nintendo?...
They put Brock Lesnar on the cover. No thanks.
Wow thats really sad blaming another game success as your reason for failing, thats not say that red dead probably did effect it somewhat but really if red dead didnt come out do you think all those people that bought it would have been like I guess since theres nothing out ill buy UFC
I bought the game but never play it because the career mode is WAAAY too menu heavy.
I think the control scheme is pretty good but I guess Im in the minority on that, and I think thats the real reason its not selling well.
THQ should remake No Mercy from N64 --- AKI MAN vs THQ MAN --- till then you get no love from me
Or UFC games are just total garbage.......................................................................................................................................................
I had a lot of fun with the UFC game. However I am waiting for a price drop before I buy it.
Just got Red Dead today and I have to say itz probally the best game i've played,so I can see how people blame it for their game's bad sales. But still 2.6 million copies and you aren't happy. Sounds like another company is getting greedy.
