The lights are on
Trying to make sense of the Legend of Zelda series' continuity is an exercise in futility, though some people still try. There are occasional references between the games, but Nintendo has shied away from making too many definitive bridges between titles. Would you believe that Nintendo itself claims to have a timeline in mind? And that the upcoming Skyward Sword takes place before the events of Ocarina of Time? Really?
Go Nintendo has posted an excerpt of an interview from Official Nintendo Magazine, in which series veteran Eiji Aonuma says that there's more of a method behind the apparent madness than we might believe.
“Yes, there is a master timeline but it's [a] confidential document! The only people to have access to that document are myself, Mr. Miyamoto, and the director of the title," he reportedly says. "We can't share it with anyone else! I have already talked to Mr. Miyamoto about this, so I am comfortable in releasing this information – this title [Skyward Sword] takes place before Ocarina of Time. If I said that a certain title was ‘the first Zelda game,’ then that means that we can't ever make a title that takes place before that! So for us to add titles to the series, we have to have a way of putting the titles before or after each other.”
Is this level of secrecy even necessary? Surely, Nintendo could just outright say that such and such was the first game in the series, and players would be sophisticated to know that means "so far." Nintendo fans are a forgiving lot. Just spill it already!

Yeah really, my brother and I have spent so long trying to piece the timeline together.
Skyward Sword-->Ocarina of Time-->Twilight Princess is easy enough
Windwaker-->Phantom Hourglass-->Spirit Tracks is pretty easy too
But where do the other random games fit in, like Four Swords?
Maybe they don't want to share the time line because it has every Zelda game that will ever be made on it. It's a possibility.
There is no Spoon...I mean timeline...
Well, as far as the timeline goes, my understanding of it goes:
Skyward Sword -> Ocarina of Time -> Majora's Mask -> Twilight Princess -> Windwaker
Anything I omitted I'm just not sure about.
whats the point of hiding a timeline if anything they would make their fans happier if they released it
Aha! Would you believe me if I said I didn't know that?
i had a feeling that this would come before ocarina of time, after all, the master sword is already created and is in the temple of time at the beginning of ocarina, and whereas skyward sword is about the creation of the master sword, it must come first
Well they made it pretty clear that Windwaker was before all the other Zelda titles, so why can't they do that for the other games. Either way it doesn't really matter, because it's pretty much the same story structure in every game.
So I guess they're George Lucas-ing it. That is, if George Lucas all of a sudden made 10 more Star Wars movies that took place in random places in the Star Wars timeline.
I never really thought of time lines between all the games. I guess I just assumed they were all off by themselves, happening in parallel universes or something. Like the latest Star Trek movie...
Wii takes place BEFORE NES!!!
They were not thinking of a timeline when they were making the games, so IDGAF what timeline they made after everyone did their pointless speculation.
I always knew that there was a timeline. Some of the timeline we already know. For instance, we now know that it goes Skyward Sword > Ocarina of Time > Majora's Mask > Wind Waker. And that's just a small section that we know about.
Mmm I this timeline does seem interesting since a lot of people can figure out a pretty basic timeline from Ocarina - Majora's Mask - Twilight. But I kinda liked that it was the zelda games were in their own universe. mmm..I dont know
Wow...really surprised by this! I didn't think there was gonna be anymore Skyward Sword news till it was close to release. Cool news though :).
Btw, why is Ninty still keeping the timeline secret!!!???
also, I wounder who the villain might be this time....
Ummmmm the timeline? So we have a ton of Links, Zeldas and Gannondorfs running around in a bunch of different time periods? Ahhhh the confusion....
Give the people what they want! Include the master time line in the collector edition, I'd buy it for that!
