Mega Man Universe Announced, A Capcom Fan’s Wildest Dream

by Tim Turi on Jul 16, 2010 at 06:37 AM

There have been rumors rumbling about Mega Man Universe, but today Capcom officially announced the crazy new title. After reading the press release and watching the trailer, my mind has broken. From the sounds of it, imagination and classic gameplay are the cornerstones of the project, and user-created content may be in order. Based on what we can be seen in the announcement trailer, Capcom fans can anticipate crossovers of their favorite franchises, including Street Fighter, Bionic Commando, and Ghouls ‘n Ghosts.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to announce Mega Man Universe,” said Kenji Inafune, Mega Man’s creator. “This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be. When fans finally get to see it, I believe they’ll envision their most far-out Mega Man dreams coming true.”

Capcom also revealed that this game will “deliver the most creative Mega Man experience yet,” and that imagination is the focus. Sounds a lot to me like Capcom is going to put the power to create original Mega Man content in the hands of gamers. We can only hope for a game similar to Mega Man: Powered Up, but on a much larger scale. Capcom does hint that it's "your world, Megafied," after all.

Mega Man 10’s success is referenced by Capcom, and the company asserts that they’re aiming to deliver that same core experience while innovating on it. Finally, they say “classic gaming will never be the same again.”

Needless to say, I’m very excited. We’re going to have to wait for more information on the game, but if you have an ounce of retro respect for yourself, watch this absolutely kick ass announcement trailer. It contains a clay-mation version of Mega Man morphing into Ryu and Arthur while blasting Mets and other Capcom villains. It may kill the rest of your day with incessant re-watching, though.

You can bet your e-tanks that when more information surfaces, I'll let you know.
