Rockstar’s Red Dead Team Gets Trimmed

by Ben Reeves on Jul 14, 2010 at 05:50 PM

Rockstar San Diego, formerly Angel Studios, has been the developer behind the Midnight Club and Smuggler's Run series. Now just two months after shipping Red Dead Redemption it sounds like a portion of the staff will have to start looking for new work after inevitable studio cuts.

Rockstar is known to be the kind of developer who balloons its staff up to several hundred nearing a project's close, and then trims its teams back down between releases to reduce costs. So these rumors are likely true, and Rockstar hasn’t denied them.

In fact, Steve Martin, studio manager at Rockstar San Diego, sent out the following statement in response to queries about the lay-offs:

"As Rockstar San Diego transitions from the launch of Red Dead Redemption onto future projects, we are realigning our resources in order to continue to develop games as effectively as possible. We are ensuring that all employees who are affected by these changes are being treated with care. While we have no announcements to make regarding a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, the team here are hard at work on the development of downloadable content for the game."
