Ed Boon Reveals The Canceled Mortal Kombat: Fire & Ice

We had a chance to speak with Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon today, and he mentioned a series title that never saw the light of day. It sounds similar to 2005's Shaolin Monks, but featuring rivals Sub-Zero and Scorpion working in tandem.

"When they finished [Shaolin Monks], the guys at Paradox were gonna do another one called Fire & Ice. It was gonna be a co-operative Scorpion and Sub-Zero game," Boon said. "They actually started the early stages of that game, but they couldn’t do it in time and under budget, so the project was canceled and kind of went away."

He continued by poking fun at one of the less fondly-remembered Mortal Kombat titles. "There were a few that have been started, and some that never should have been finished. Special Forces probably shouldn’t have ever been shipped."

Special Forces and MK Mythologies were certainly missteps for the series, but Shaolin Monks was a great co-op experience. Unfortunately, it looks like we won't be seeing Scorpion and Sub-Zero teaming up anytime soon.

  • Shaolin Monks was AWESOME except for the triple boss fight at the end. I'd gladly play a sequel or spin-off

  • Shaolin Monks was allright, worth buying, but nothing amazing. I would have bought a Scorpion, Sub Zero team up though.

  • this game is actually looking pretty cool.

  • shaolin monks was probably my favorite mortal kombat, fire and ice could have been even better

  • That could have been awesome...

A lot better than MK Mythologies: Sub Zero...

  • scorpion and sub-zero would have been really interesting in a co-op title

  • That would have been fun to play....kinda like Shaolin Monks was.

  • That's unfortunate. Besides Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, which doesn't really count, I haven't played a Mortal Kombat since Deadly Alliance. It sounds like I've missed out on a bit. And Fire and Ice sounds pretty cool. Fighting games generally don't satisfy in the area of "adventure mode". Tekken 6's Scenario Campaign was horrible. I wonder how this would've turned out. Anyway, I can't wait for Mortal Kombat!

  • Hmm... enemies working together? Well, that doesn't sound familiar at all. Oh, wait! F.E.A.R. 3 seems to be doing that! lol, I sense a disturbance in the Force.

  • sounds like a interesting game but the name sux

  • I'm content that this never came to fruition.

  • Shaolin Monks was awesome, and Special Forces was supposed to be terrible. You guys (Game Informer) should do a special Replay where you revisit Shaolin Monks and then Replay Roulette Special Forces for kicks.

Seriously though, Paradox kicked ASS with SM. They embarassed the main MK team if you ask me. The animations and combat system in 'Monks was top-notch. Unlike the MK games of the era (Deadly Alliance and its ilk), Paradox understood things like "transitional animations" and "hit stuns". They could make attacks that flow into each other, and not just pump out crappy, canned, "dial-a-combos". I have no idea what happened to that team - I believe they did TNA Impact after that - but they're clearly some of the ONLY western developers who really get fighting and melee combat, and how to do them very, very well. They're like the polar opposite of your usual 100% mocapped, unresponsive fighting developer from the west (I'm looking at you, EA's Fight Night/MMA team!).

    Where are you now, Paradox!?!
  • Wish this would have come out. Curse you, Time and Budget!

  • I rented Shaolin Monks. I loved Shaolin Monks. I bought Xbox 360. I sold Xbox. I bought Shaolin Monks. Game not compatible with Xbox 360. I was unhappy for the rest of my life.   FIN

  • that replay was funny as hell haha

  • Well, I have a feeling that MK: F&I would have been an atrocious game.

  • Ah too bad. Shaolin Monks was good .

  • Aw man that'd be cool to be able to hang out with my ninja friend and do ninja stuff, and smoke with cigarettes.

  • they should make a game called ketchup and Mustard for Sector and Cyrax or a cooking with Scorpion game.

  • I really like how the MK creators try different things all the time, it shows they arent afraid of making something new without automatically rejecting ideas.
