Was Move Planned For PS3 From The Start?

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jul 08, 2010 at 02:00 PM

When Sony announced the PlayStation Move, most gamers wrote it off as a cheap attempt to cash in on Nintendo's success with motion-based controllers. But is that the truth? Not if you believe Sony's president and CEO, Kazuo Hirai. In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Hirai states that Move, Blu-ray, and 3D gaming are all technologies Sony has been working on for quite some time.

When asked if 3D was something that was considered before the launch of the PS3, Hirai had this to say:

"Well not just 3D, but the Move and Blu-ray too. Those are things we talked about internally before the launch. We knew that the PS3 needed to have a 10-year life cycle – much like the PlayStation and the PS3. Given how fast technology turns over now, we knew going in that we had to pack a lot of horsepower into the PS3."

Hirai also stressed two important requirements for integrating new technology into the PS3: the ability for future upgrades to work with every iteration of the console (something that may not be the case with the PSP), and to make sure they "offer are a complete package from day one," adding that Sony doesn't want to have to release a "PlayStation Move Plus" in the future, a jab at Nintendo's Wii Motion-Plus.

We can definitely appreciate Sony's vision of a 10-year life cycle for the PS3, but we're not convinced the PlayStation Move has been in development as long as Hirai is claiming. If it's true, then let's hope it will result in some quality gaming experiences that go beyond primitive controller waggling.
